HOUSING
by Maria, Semester at Sea (University of Pittsburgh), Pittsburgh, United States
Law, Independent
Personal assessment
Cost
KEY:
Couldn't have asked for more.
Pretty good.
Could've been better, but didn't lessen the overall experience.
Disappointing.
Facilities
Location
Cleanliness
Space
Type of housing: On board
Arranged by: Home university
If returning, I would choose: With a family
Why? I made friends with the students and locals. My housing was very far from where they would go/hang-out.
Personal comments:
There is politcal/class tension. It is best to be aware and respectful.

KEY:
Amazing! Hardly had time to study.
Plenty to do when I had the time.
So-so.
Did not get involved.
Nightlife
Travel
Overall
Describe host city: Students equally interact with the local and student community
Travel: Takes place mostly within the university/student environment
Activities, Nightlife: Takes place mostly outside the university/student environment
Personal comments:
You really need to make friends with students and locals. I don't think there were names to these places.

ACADEMIC
by rkrefetz, Wesleyan University, Middletown, CT, United States

My academic experiences
Quality of courses
KEY:
Fantastic.
Pretty good.
Could've been a bit better.
Disappointing.
Variety of courses
Availability/access to resources
Interaction with teachers
Interaction with other international students
Interaction with local students
Course recommendations:
Because the Cuban students do not have many choices for their specific courses, class schedules change frequently. It's helpful to take as many classes as possibly with the same group of students.

My opinion of the university assessment
Exams at end of course
KEY:
Liked it.
It was alright.
A bit annoying.
Didn't like it.
Exams throughout the course
Essays and/or projects at the end of course.
Essays and/or projects throughout the course
Overall
Personal comments:
Increased course choices would be an improvement.

Language difficulties
Social
KEY:
No problems.
I coped pretty well.
Sometimes it was difficult.
It was a constant struggle.
Educational
Administrative / Institutional
Overall
Language of instruction: Spanish
Was learning Spanish a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't.
How much did you improve your Spanish?
My level before: Basic phrases
My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang)
Personal comments:
Spanish spoken is mainly all slang and takes a while to adapt, but the process is accelerated by being around the locals most of the time.

EXPENSES
by rkrefetz, Wesleyan University, Middletown, CT, United States
Sociology, University Agreement
The accessibility of student needs
Second-hand text books
KEY:
Very easy.
Minimal effort.
Accessible but required effort.
Almost impossible.
Second-hand household items
Computers / Internet
Administrative
Money from home
Main source of funding:
Family
Other sources of funding:
Personal savings
Work opportunities:
It was not legal for me to work
Personal spending habits:
With residence and student identity cards, I was able to take advantage of both the peso and dollar economic systems. This allowed me to be extremely economical in my expenses.
Nightlife: was the same price as at home.
Food, Travel, Overall, Telephone, Housing: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
Daily expenses get much cheaper as you discover what can be paid for in pesos and what requires dollars. Get advice on these items before you go so you won't be taken advantage of.
