Under Spanish law, deposits on flats are 1months rent if unfurnished, or 2 if furnished. This means you pay up to 3 months' rent up front, so opening a Spanish account and transferring money ASAP is important. if you want to live cheap look for a flat. Colegios are nice because of the social touch but they are more expensive than sharing a flat is.

Try and find a flat with a phone in it or organise a mobile phone in the country, phone boxes do not except incoming calls and using a British mobile abroad would cost a bomb.

budget for temporary food and accommodation whilst you're looking, it all adds up really quickly. Take advantage of free alcohol nights and drinking from bottles on the streets to save money.

Travel by bus, that is relatively cheap and comfortable.
