Personal assessment
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: With a family
Why? As I have already lived in a dorm on campus with other students together in one apartment, it would be nice to experience family life as well.
Personal comments:
Most of the dorms are on campus; security staff takes care of unauthorized visitors. The dorms are divided into apartment in which guest students live togehter with home students. I liked that very much, therefore I had a lot of contact to Mexicans and their culture. Of course, it was very good to improve my Spanish skills. In addition there are several occasions organized such as Welcome Party, Soccer championship, Dinner Parties, etc. All in all it is very easy to built up personal contact to other students as well to staff members. STUDENT LIFE

Personal social experience
Describe host city: Student life dominates the city
Activities: Takes place mostly within the university/student environment Nightlife, Travel: Takes place mostly outside the university/student environment Personal comments:
My favourite night spots have since closed. These include Cartujos bar and La Mulada. Activity wise there is so much going on. I really enjoyed my salsa classes and travelling all around Mexico. I would not miss Taxco, San Cristobal de las Casas or Palenque and many other places. Finding out about local concerts and festivals is also worthwhile. The Cervantino Festival should not be missed. My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
I think that my expreience is different from most. Professors from my University traveled with us and taught our courses and we had class together (everyone from my university). I was disappointed in that I wanted to interact more with the natives both students and professors. It really was not an UDLA program but my university program at UDLA. That was disappointing to me but I feel that I mad ethe best of my experience. I went out in search of Mexican friends and I found them. So my assessment is really not of UDLA. I do not know what UDLA is really like as a educational institution. I just know the campus.

Language difficulties
Language of instruction: English
Local language was: Different than language of instruction.
Was learning English a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't. Was learning the local language a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my knowledge How much did you improve your local language?
My level before: Basic phrases My level after: At ease in most situations Personal comments:
Being that it was my home university's program transported to UDLA, I had no language barrier because everythig was taught in my native tongue of English. My host family was not to have spoken anything but Spanish but my host brother always wanted to speak English to better himself. I made an extreme effort to make friends with people that didn't know Englsih so that I could learn Spanish. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

The accessibility of student needs
Main source of funding:
Family Other sources of funding:
Student Loan Work opportunities:
I didn't explore any work options Personal spending habits:
The cost of living in Mexico is obviously much lower than in the UK, so food, accomodation and nightlife were significantly cheaper. I spent very little on the telephone as I stayed in contact with people at home by free email at the university. My major expense was travel, as I went away most weekends and travelled for a few months after my classes had finished. Overall, I think I probably spent more or less the same as I would in a semester at Nottingham. Travel: was more expensive than at home. Overall: was the same price as at home. Food, Nightlife, Telephone, Housing: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
Don't be afraid to spend some time looking for accommodation, as the money you spend on a cheap hotel for a few weeks can often be saved back just on your first month's rent if you take your time to find somewhere that's good value. Always take your student card with you when you travel, as you can sometimes get discounts on long journeys. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Important to choosing this university...
I wish I had known...
Get involved from day one as the semester goes very fast. In my opinion:
Everybody loved it, you will too!
During my experience abroad, I ...
Personal recommendation:
I would recommend UDLA very strongly. It caters well for International students, offers good support for those students who are not ready for Mexico outside the university walls, teaches subjects in English, has a good name and is well located for travel. FINAL COMMENTS
Mexico is a great country full of so many contrasts. Puebla has a large Spanish influence so it is beautiful architecturally and quite conservative. The university is in Cholula, which is close to Puebla. It is a small town dominated by the university. It has a lost of history and culture as well. Beware of Moctezuma's Revenge, it is not fun (especially when you have to spend a day with a drip in your arm for rehydration) Cultural differences are huge and the longer your stay the more you realise there is so much more to learn. ie put your loo paper in the bin not the toilet, being a vegetarian is pretty hard- specify every possible type of flesh you do not want in your meal when you order ie I want a meal without pork without beef without chicken without fish, or the juice of any of these..., when you are told manana expect whatever to happen later not nescessarily tomorrow, and 8pm usually means 10pm if you want to meet people. Most of all ENJOY and do not get to phased by everything, the culture is different but brilliant and colourful. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself
