HOUSING
by BastianSander, Hanzehogeschool, Hogeschool van Groningen, Groningen, Netherlands

Personal assessment
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - My choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? On campus, doesn't exist. I haven't heard anything about living with a family or a room exchange either. So, there seems to be no other choice.
Personal comments:
As far as I remember there is an accommodation service but I had been told that this is very expensive and that would be very easy to find a place to stay. The "problem" of using the service is that you will be placed with other exchange students. This isn't a really good way to improve your Spanish which was at least my main objective. Better is trying to find something with another Spanish person. I have to admit that this is quite dificult because Spanish students tend to live at home with their parents. But you'll never know unless you try. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Personal social experience
Describe host city: Students equally interact with the local and student community
Activities, Nightlife, Travel: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment Personal comments:
Definitely don't miss the running of the bulls in Pamplona during July. It is the biggest party you will ever go to in your life. The parte viejo in town has the best food, drinks, and social gatherings. It's a great place to people watch and meet new friends as well. ACADEMIC

My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
Take as many as you can. You pay for it, so you might as well. Also take advantage of the "intercambio" which is teaming up with a spanish student to practice your spanish and their english. I wish I had done that now because many students got a lot out of meeting them. You practiced your language and you made some Spanish friends.
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
Show up for class!!! You will miss so much if you don't. Also, do your homework. It's so easy to get caught up in everything else and lose track of the reason why you're there: to learn!!! This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Language difficulties
Language of instruction: Spanish
Was learning Spanish a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my Spanish How much did you improve your Spanish?
My level before: Basic phrases My level after: At ease in most situations Personal comments:
My main reason to go to Spain was to learn the language of the country. In my opinion Spanish is of the best languages to know. However, in the beginning I only knew very basic phrases and didn't feel well prepared through my Spanish courses at my home university. For example, I couldn't even order things without any problems. I had master dificulties. But with the help of my Spanish friends which I partly already had met at my home university I learned really fast. I hardly was in contact with any other exchange student and tried to live the Spanish way of life. I think that is the best way to really absorb the language. EXPENSES

The accessibility of student needs
Main source of funding:
Personal savings Other sources of funding:
Family Personal savings Work opportunities:
I didn't explore any work options Personal spending habits:
When you are there you feel like time is limited and you must just do things on a whim. You may have one chance to travel to a city so you do it! Same with going out at night, you don't want to miss a second. Travel, Nightlife, Overall, Telephone: was more expensive than at home. Food, Housing: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
When you withdraw money from the cash machine do it in large quantities as you are charged everytime you withdraw money. Have a budget in mind for the whole trip and split that into how much you want to spend per month, so you don't go crazy and end up having to go home early. Important to choosing this university...
I wish I had known...
I wished I knew more about the University and the subjects we would have to pick and also the little administrative problems that may occur. In my opinion:
Everybody loved it, you will too!
During my experience abroad, I ...
Personal recommendation:
Although I had a great time the university should plan more events to allow the locals students and international students interact. FINAL COMMENTS
For travel you should travel all you can both inside the Basque Country-to all the villages along the coast and outside it to Barcelona or even to the South. Holy week is a great time to travel as everyone goes somewhere. If looking for accommodation go the University they have noticeboards with many accommodation offers at really reasonable prices.
