If returning, I would choose: On campus
Why? Because is good to breath the "Universitu" atmosphere in every kind of contest,complitely. And is much more easier to get in contact with a lot of persons.
Personal comments:
The room was pretty small,but very clean.They offer a lot of addictional services like cleaning your dresses,room and other things.The life with the other students,foreign and locals was just extraordinary!

Don't absolutely loose O jantar dos caloiros and the Queima das fitas: they are the two main university events.Go to the Praia da luz to take a coffe and you won't have problems to find a gym for training.Ribeira and so on and on...

The first twoo months was pretty difficult following the lessons in portugees but then it was allright.

Food is cheaper than in Italy. Calling to my country every day was pretty expensive. I live with my parents so I don't spend a dine in Italy. In general Portugal is a bit cheaper than Italy.
Telephone, Housing: was more expensive than at home.
Travel, Nightlife: was the same price as at home.
Food, Overall: was less expensive than at home.
