HOUSING
by Robert, University of Wales, Bangor, Bangor, United Kingdom
Language, Erasmus
Personal assessment
Type of housing: With a family
Arranged by: Independently - I had no other choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? Private accomodation gives you the chance to meet many new people and face up to the facts of the īreal world, ie having to pay rent on time etc.
Personal comments:
Help for housing from this university is none existent! This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

STUDENT LIFE

Personal social experience
Describe host city: Students equally interact with the local and student community
Nightlife, Travel: Takes place mostly outside the university/student environment Activities: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment Personal comments:
"Andromeda" is a night club where foreigns don't pay to get in. The place isn't to good but it's the one stys open till late!!Is in the center near to Piazza la Signoria and Il Duomo. There's another cafe bar very nice to eat or have a drink called "La Torre" placed in the other side of the river Arno, just in front of the Ufizzi Gallery. To have a coffe, a very cool place is Astor placed in one side of Il Duomo going to Piaza San Marco. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

ACADEMIC

My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
It was VERY different from the American University system, but this is one of the things that made me learn so much. You make of it what you can, and if you chose not to interact with teachers and other students, then you certainly aren't encouraged to. If you do chose to, however, you benefit. In these courses I did learn an incredible amount about the subject matter, which was very gratifying.
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
I was frustrated with Georgetown because they would only give me credits for certain courses, and our courseload in the spring was greater than a normal Italian studen't courseload. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Language difficulties
Language of instruction: Italian
Was learning Italian a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my Italian How much did you improve your Italian?
My level before: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.) My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang) Personal comments:
If you really want to learn Italian you simply have to go to Italy. The people are very nice, helpful and thankful for every "grazie" and "Ciao". Don't be afraid of talking but never forget that Italians are very polite people - they would never correct you if you don't ask them to! The city of Florence pays for a language class (Via Morgani). The Italian spoken in and around Florence (toscano) is really nice and you'll soon pick up an accent. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

EXPENSES

The accessibility of student needs
Main source of funding:
An ERASMUS grant Other sources of funding:
Personal savings Work opportunities:
I didn't want/need to work Personal spending habits:
Serious question??! Florence is a very expensive city (10 000 lire/drink) but I didn't mind because I had the time of my life - actually, I'm going back to Fi in October 2001. I came back broke but rich in experience... Food, Travel, Nightlife, Overall, Telephone, Housing: was more expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
Eat in Via San Gallo, Via del Romito (nice "mensa"!), get to know Mario (smile), buy a used bike (public transport is an adventure anyway), almost all bars have "happy hours", many free concerts in the Cascine in summer, great market in the Cascine once a week. OVERALL

Important to choosing this university...
I wish I had known...
The problems to confirm the subjects studied there In my opinion:
Everybody loved it, you will too!
During my experience abroad, I ...
Personal recommendation:
The first and more important thing is to go to San Marco's office to get the official papers and to the police to get your visa. After that you should go to your studies center then go to the "mensa" (where you'll eat), the one in San Gallo to get your student identity card. FINAL COMMENTS
Don't get too depress if you don't find a house to live in less than a week, and you finally start to life with exchange students and not Italian is hard! To travel in train there are discount if you travel in group of 3, ask anyway in the train station!! This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself
