Buy yourself a good tourbook before you leave and a few rolls of film + camera. Make the most of it! Eat at the local bakeries and experience German clubs (the music is much better than in North America!!). Read Review

HOUSING

Personal assessment
Cost
KEY:
Couldn't have asked for more.
Pretty good.
Could've been better, but didn't lessen the overall experience.
Disappointing.

Type of housing: Halls of Residence
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: On campus
Why? The UniViertel Halls of Residence are right on uni campus within 2 mins walking distance from classrooms etc.
Personal comments:
Accommodation provided by university is very cheap and reasonable in comparison to the British ones. Some of the halls are a bit far away from the campus but Augsburg is not such a big place.

STUDENT LIFE

Personal social experience
Activities
KEY:
Amazing! Hardly had time to study.
Plenty to do when I had the time.
So-so.
Did not get involved.
Nightlife
Travel
Overall
Describe host city: Students interact with the local community without much university involvement
Travel: Takes place mostly outside the university/student environment
Activities, Nightlife: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment
Personal comments:
All student Halls have Bierstubes and that is where students get the best, cheap bier etc. The bars are not classy but that is where u get to see all of your friends. Nightlife in town is OK;the nightclubs were too small for myself. Best club: the Yum Club.

Disappointing.
Variety of courses
Availability/access to resources

Interaction with other international students
Interaction with local students
Course recommendations:
Register for courses in advance as most courses get full up 2 weeks before the start of term.

My opinion of the university assessment
Exams at end of course
KEY:
Liked it.
It was alright.
A bit annoying.
Didn't like it.
Exams throughout the course
Essays and/or projects at the end of course.
Essays and/or projects throughout the course
Overall
Personal comments:
The Library is very complicated and outdated. The system in place is very strange and unfriendly. The lecturers and professors will only see you in their Sprechstunden and that is only 2hrs/week;personally, i found that totally unhelpfull.

Was learning German a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my German
How much did you improve your German?
My level before: At ease in most situations
My level after: At ease in most situations
Personal comments:
it was great as I only spoke German everyday and it improved so much, I began to get way more confident speaking it. Of course my grammar wasn't always perfect but I was still confident.

Personal spending habits:
I don't travel very much in Canada; however in Germany, I travelled every weekend. This ended costing me more than I thought it would. It was all worth it! Fruits and vegetables were most expensive than at home, but, then again, they tasted better and were always fresh! :)
Telephone, Housing: was more expensive than at home.
Overall: was the same price as at home.
Food, Travel, Nightlife: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
None at all. Expect to spend about 1000DM per month....now, I don't know how the prices have changed since the Euro.

I wish I had known...
I was very lucky in that I actually knew someone in Dublin who had relatives in Augsburg - they supplied me with all relavent information, such as which local health certificates are required and where to take out a bank account and health insurance in Augsburg.
In my opinion:
Everybody loved it, you will too!

During my experience abroad, I ...
Became familiar with another culture
KEY:
Happened all the time.
Happened quite a lot.
Happened a bit.
Didn't happen.
Traveled
Improved language skills
Met people from other countries
Became more independent
Partied a lot
Experienced a change in life
Advanced my studies/career
Personal recommendation:
The university has great facilities and as a town, Augsburg offers students great opportunities.

FINAL COMMENTS

There is no international airport in Augsburg and the last trains leave Munich at about midnight so it is best to arrive early. Be sure to have all relevant documents as the local authorities will not give much leeway on that front. get a bank account as soon as possible.
