In the US travel is expensive : airlines might offer reasonable rates, but the time you are away from work and studies is a factor in how "expensive" and inconvenient regular travel becomes. In France I found I could take a trip every month or so with the train, student discounts were abound, and hostels or budget traveling were simply more convenient to look in to. The telephone situation, well, if you buy a cell phone and use it without an "abonnement" then you're pretty much going to spend a lot of money. Telephone, Housing: was more expensive than at home. Food, Nightlife, Overall: was the same price as at home. Travel: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
Most things in Paris of cultural value are free to students. See if the Sorbonne can't hook you up with a "histoire de l'art" student card (should be easy if you follow the conference) so that you can get into most private museums for free. Movies are cheap, alcohol is cheap, everything is pretty inexpensive, and if you are out of cash, just walk around. If you plan to be there a year, make sure to get an Imagine R card for the subway. Accomodation in Paris is just expensive but to have this apartment in the centre paid off. Of course, Paris heavily depends on Tourism and is one of the most visited places on earth. Therefore, nightlife and generally going out is expensive. Travelling in France is somewhat cheaper, the railway is not as privatized as in Germany and the public transport system in Paris costs the same as in Hamburg for students but is far better! Nightlife, Overall, Housing: was more expensive than at home. Food, Telephone: was the same price as at home. Travel: was less expensive than at home.

Phone bills were through the roof... but the metro is reasonable and reliable. Drinking is cheap too and accomodation no dearer than Dublin. Telephone: was more expensive than at home. Overall, Housing: was the same price as at home. Food, Travel, Nightlife: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
Drink Bon Prix cider. Avoid the Champs and any so called latino bars at all costs. Look out of open bars, best deal in Europe. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

I spent more on food and travel because these were opportunities which I do not have in New York. I spent less on the telephone and housing because these are typically cheaper in Paris than in NY. Food, Travel, Overall: was more expensive than at home. Nightlife: was the same price as at home. Telephone, Housing: was less expensive than at home.

Absolutely everything in Paris was much more expensive than in Canada. Really, at one point I had to stop converting prices in my head or else I'd starve! Money lost all it's value in Paris - it might as well have been Monopoly currency! Food, Travel, Nightlife, Overall, Telephone, Housing: was more expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
I was most suprised by the huge amounts I spent just on feeding myself. Really I would say that board was my number one expenditure! No way to get around that though . . . This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Everything costs more in Paris - it's a capital city. Food, Travel, Nightlife, Overall, Telephone, Housing: was more expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
Buy a carte Imagine-R (the student rail pass): it costs half the price of a carte orange. Get it as quickly as possible. Shop at Monoprix if you have money, or Leader Price if you don't. I hate Franprix. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

I was in a Salvation Army hostel and paid 1600FF per month for my room, roughly 160 British pounds, so the rent wasn't expensive. Bus passes cost less (for the monthly "abbonnement")than in England. Food, Nightlife, Overall, Telephone: was the same price as at home. Travel, Housing: was less expensive than at home.
