HOUSING
by chantry_bee, University of Birmingham, Birmingham, United Kingdom
Physics, Erasmus
Personal assessment
Cost
KEY:
Couldn't have asked for more.
Pretty good.
Could've been better, but didn't lessen the overall experience.
Disappointing.
Facilities
Location
Cleanliness
Space
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? The Halls of Residence, although outrageoously cheap, were a terrible place to live with few amenities and little feeling of community.
Personal comments:
The Halls are cheap, but not cheerful. I saved a lot of money living there and it is worth it if you have to budget but living in the centre of Toulouse is far more appealing...

Personal social experience
Activities
KEY:
Amazing! Hardly had time to study.
Plenty to do when I had the time.
So-so.
Did not get involved.
Nightlife
Travel
Overall
Describe host city: Student life dominates the city
Activities, Nightlife, Travel: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment
Personal comments:
Lots of places to meet Erasmus-people, where you got invited for too much interesting stuff except for studywork :) places: the Gates, adrians café, Chez Ton Ton, Café Popular,...

ACADEMIC

My academic experiences
Quality of courses
KEY:
Fantastic.
Pretty good.
Could've been a bit better.
Disappointing.
Variety of courses
Availability/access to resources
Interaction with teachers
Interaction with other international students
Interaction with local students
Course recommendations:
According the ECTS-contract we had to follow some courses we've had seen more detailed in Belgium and where we didn't saw something new. There were other very interesting course given on the university but they were not in our schedule.

My opinion of the university assessment
Exams at end of course
KEY:
Liked it.
It was alright.
A bit annoying.
Didn't like it.
Exams throughout the course
Essays and/or projects at the end of course.
Essays and/or projects throughout the course
Overall
Personal comments:
the choice of courses more in concert with the students, its time spilling work when you have to follow the same courses twice a year instead of taking advantage of following courses dealing the speciallity of the host university. (in my case more about composites!)

It was a constant struggle.

Overall
Language of instruction: French
Was learning French a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my French
How much did you improve your French?
My level before: At ease in most situations
My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang)
Personal comments:
Learning to perfect French in Toulouse is a wonderful experience. The local Toulousain accent is the most distinctive in France and the way they pronouce the language is enchanting. I recommend Toulouse as a place to study and live unreservedly.

EXPENSES
by chantry_bee, University of Birmingham, Birmingham, United Kingdom

The accessibility of student needs
Second-hand text books
KEY:
Very easy.
Minimal effort.
Accessible but required effort.
Almost impossible.
Second-hand household items
Computers / Internet
Administrative
Money from home
Main source of funding:
Family
Other sources of funding:
Personal savings
An ERASMUS grant
Work opportunities:
I didn't explore any work options
Personal spending habits:
Socialising in France is prohibitively expensive. Buy alcohol at supermarkets and drink at home before hitting the town! Other expenditure is generally slightly cheaper in Toulouse compared to the UK
Nightlife, Telephone: was more expensive than at home.
Overall: was the same price as at home.
Food, Travel, Housing: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
Just approach French bureaucracy with caution!
