Universiteit Antwerpen (UFSIA campus) (UFSIA)

University of Antwerp (UFSIA campus), Grote Kauwenberg 2, 2000 Antwerpen, Belgium
4.08 / 5 based on 84 reviews.
Description:
The University of Antwerp (UA) is unique in its form. It consists of three university institutions, of which UFSIA (Universitaire Faculteiten Sint-Ignatius te Antwerpen) is one. UA's uniqueness arises from the fact that two of its three 'arms' have an entirely different history and background: the Universitair Centrum Antwerpen (RUCA) is state owned, whereas UFSIA is a private university, founded by the Jesuit fathers. The third arm is the pluralistic Universitaire Instelling Antwerpen (UIA). Both UFSIA and RUCA were originally founded in 1852 and acquired university status in 1965.

KEY:
Couldn't have asked for more.
Pretty good.
Could've been better, but didn't lessen the overall experience.
Disappointing.

Type of housing: Student residence
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Student residence
Why? Living with 20 other students seemed like a nightmare at first but it was the best decision I made. You get to know people so much better and the house parties are amasing!
Personal comments:
Uni doesn't usually organise accomodation for ERAMUSers staying for a full year but I managed to get a place at the last minute. This was brilliant but it would have been more helpful at the beginning. Don't worry though cos there is plenty of choice if you do so independently

Describe host city: Students equally interact with the local and student community
Activities, Nightlife, Travel: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment
Personal comments:
best cafe/night spots: the buwee, kazza, the muse (for jazz) best events: check out the cinema museum they have a diferent film every night. and also all the jazz concerts everywhere look for a week-guide that should be in every cafe, it's in flemish but you'll understand somethings

My academic experiences
Quality of courses
KEY:
Fantastic.
Pretty good.
Could've been a bit better.
Disappointing.
Variety of courses
Availability/access to resources
Interaction with teachers
Interaction with other international students
Interaction with local students
Course recommendations:
One course that I found very valuable was one that was divided into two sections. One was Dutch art/architecture and the other was about European economics. Both taught very different from the ways course are taught in the United States.

My opinion of the university assessment
Exams at end of course
KEY:
Liked it.
It was alright.
A bit annoying.
Didn't like it.
Exams throughout the course
Essays and/or projects at the end of course.
Essays and/or projects throughout the course
Overall
Personal comments:
The Belgian professors didn't seem as involved with the students academic careers as the American professors did. I guess they could have been more accessible.

Language of instruction: English

Was learning English a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my English
Was learning the local language a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my knowledge
How much did you improve your English?
My level before: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.)
My level after: At ease in most situations
How much did you improve your local language?
My level before: Did not speak it
My level after: Basic phrases
Personal comments:
It was interesting to learn the local language and the course was not very hard because it is very similar to German. But I wouldn't make the course if I had to decide again, because most of the people can speak English and Flemish isn't necessary.

I wish I had known...
I found the speed of adminstrative matters really frustrating and the Belgian's laissez-faire attitude was almost too much for me. A lot of things we needed to know was from other students and not from the uni like it should be. Also I found that Brits tend to be amongst the best mannered of all students here and this was hard to adapt to.
In my opinion:
Everybody loved it, you will too!

During my experience abroad, I ...
Became familiar with another culture
KEY:
Happened all the time.
Happened quite a lot.
Happened a bit.
Didn't happen.
Traveled
Improved language skills
Met people from other countries
Became more independent
Partied a lot
Experienced a change in life
Advanced my studies/career
Personal recommendation:
The uni itself is really quite good and overall the quality of teaching/subject coverage is better than at home.
