HOUSING
Personal assessment
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? It's ok to live at the student's Guest House for a short while (1 semester), but for extended periods of time, it's not a good deal. The prices are too high for what you get, it's far better to find a place in town with more space and the same extras (internet, phone, etc.)for a much lower price. It's worth saying, though, that for an erasumus student that doesn't speak dutch, living at the univerity's residece is easier, as it's not necessary to deal with landlords, contracts, you always get your deposits back, and it's easier to meet people.
Personal comments:
I think the rooms are quite good, the internet connection is fast, and the premises are very clean. However, the prices are just too high, compared to any other accomodation in town. I belive the student's guest house is the best place to meet people and make friends, as they are all international students on Erasmus. Activities: Takes place mostly within the university/student environment Travel: Takes place mostly outside the university/student environment Nightlife: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment Personal comments:
The Shamrock, and The Highlander irish pubs, and The Metamorphoos, as a disco full of international students. Never miss the special parties at the Bonbonniere. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

ACADEMIC
My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
yes, make sure your english is very good, because the educational system is based on active participation and presentations about the study topics. Many students that don't speak good english have a very hard time adapting. Another thing, if you want have easy classes, dont choose the financial ones, because you'll have to study hard!
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
yes, final exams should actually evaluate what you learn during the course, instead of just testing how good you can memorize articles and authors. Final exams should target analysis, not memory! this is not highshool! This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Language difficulties
Language of instruction: English
Local language was: Different than language of instruction.
Was learning English a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't. Was learning the local language a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my knowledge How much did you improve your English?
My level before: No problems in any areas (including slang) My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang) How much did you improve your local language?
My level before: Did not speak it My level after: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.) Personal comments:
I learned a bit of Dutch, but it was quite hard, as everyone there speaks fluent English, and they reply back to you in English if they notice you're not local. Concerning my language of instruction, well, it was in English, and I'm totally bilingual in Spanish and English, as I grew up in the USA as a kid so nothing much to say there. I did, however, learn basic Italian with my friends, and then decided to take intensive courses in this language. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

EXPENSES
The accessibility of student needs
Main source of funding:
Family Other sources of funding:
None Work opportunities:
I worked during my study abroad experience Personal spending habits:
well, first of all at home i lived with my parents, so i didn't have to pay for food, or housing; and second, because i went out much more often while abroad, prices were higher, i traveled everytime i could, and i had to make international phone calls constantly, things that i very randomly did at home. Food, Travel, Nightlife, Overall, Telephone, Housing: was more expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
public transportation is a bit expensive, so a bicycle is always a good investment This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Personal recommendation:
It's a perfect place to open your mind to different cultures and points of view, as you'll always be in class with people from all over the world. Apart from learning a lot, you'll also have plenty of time to travel, go out, and enjoy off campus life. FINAL COMMENTS
when traveling to Belgium (just 5 minutes away from Maastricht) buy the 10 journey pass, wich saves a lot of money! also, check out Ryanair flights out of Charleroi (in belgium, but close)to a lot of destinations in europe..buy in advance and just fly roundtrip for 30 euros !
