HOUSING
by conni, Universitŕ di Bologna, Bologna, Italy

Personal assessment
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - I had no other choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? I like living with other people, but I don't think I could stand having rules or a fixed timetable as in a campus
Personal comments:
In four months I changed house three times, but my dutch friends told me this is quite normal in A'dam. Anyway, I really liked my last two houses. Both of them were student houses, in the centre. They were quite expensive, but rooms were big and cleaning charges were included. But what I liked the best was definitely the experience of sharing a flat with students from all over the world. I really learned a lot from that. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

STUDENT LIFE

Personal social experience
Describe host city: Student life dominates the city
Travel: Takes place mostly outside the university/student environment Activities, Nightlife: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment Personal comments:
Trust me Guys, in Amsterdam you do not have to look for a nice palce to have a coffe, lunch or fancy dinner. You won't have any porblems with exporing the cultural side of the city or night life scene. It is very relaxed and entertainment driven city, so please do not forget what you coming here for:) This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
As you probably know as an exchange student you are entitled to choose any subjects on languages you speak at any faculties of the University. It is advisable though to ask the lecturer in advance and find out if there are any prerequisites, which you can find at the University Web site. All handbooks are available to buy at the faculty shops. Each subject has its own Web page connected to the University main Internet site. You will find there all information about your teachers, student group, home assignment; further readings as well as transparencies form the lectures if such are available.

Language difficulties
Language of instruction: English
Local language was: Different than language of instruction.
Was learning English a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't. Was learning the local language a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my knowledge How much did you improve your local language?
My level before: Did not speak it My level after: Basic phrases Personal comments:
I lived in Amsterdam for four months and, unhappily, I could not learn dutch as much as I would have liked. But I took international courses in English. So, classes were given in English and students were english speaking people. In this sense, I love to say that my english level improved very much in this period. In fact, I couldn't believe when I left Amsterdam I could express myself so easily in this language (I even dreamt in English!). I have done my best to keep on improving since then. EXPENSES

The accessibility of student needs
Main source of funding:
Government assistance Other sources of funding:
None Work opportunities:
I worked during my study abroad experience Personal spending habits:
What took must of my monthly budget was the rent because housing is really expensive in Amsterdam. Food was cheaper than in Sweden but books were the same. Housing: was more expensive than at home. Travel, Nightlife, Overall, Telephone: was the same price as at home. Food: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
Rents are expensive. Tips are much less than in US/UK, so worth bearing in mind that it is enought to round off the bill. The cheapest veggies and fruit can be found at markets - supermarkets are expensive, especially Albert Hein (even though the nicest one). Important to choosing this university...
I wish I had known...
I wish to had known that you have to apply for the Dutch courses in the beginning very quickly. In my opinion:
Everybody loved it, you will too!
During my experience abroad, I ...
Personal recommendation:
As far as I can judge from the experience that my fellow students made is the University of Amsterdam overall a very recommendable exchange and Master university. But make sure to check if the courses you want to attend also really correspod to what you want to do. FINAL COMMENTS
Amsterdam is very centrally located. A trip to Utrecht, which is a very nice and cosy city, takes max. 30 minutes by train. Use the closeness to the sea in the summer. Zandfoort op Zee is also only 30 minutes by train away. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself
