Universitetet i Bergen
Langes gate 3, 5020 Bergen, Norway
Description:
The Parliamentary Resolution of 9th April, 1946, formally established the University of Bergen. By European standards the University of Bergen is a young university. However, its academic roots are deep. Research and teaching have long been fields of activity in Bergen's Museum, which was founded as far back as 1825.

HOUSING
Personal assessment
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: On campus
Why? It is the best place yo meet new people from the start. Especially all Erasmus people come together here. I got the chance to meet some "local" norwegian students aswell!
Personal comments:
They offer pretty good and reasonable priced housing, at 5 km from University. The accomodation is old but practical and has a nice atmosphere to it from the 70's! This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

STUDENT LIFE
Personal social experience
Describe host city: Student life dominates the city
Activities: Takes place mostly within the university/student environment Nightlife, Travel: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment Personal comments:
You should definitely go to USF(old sardine factory) where they have many concerts and cultural events! If you like more hardrock music, then the famous "Hullen" bar in a cave(!) is the place for you! Many other cozy places to go to (Cafe Vögen, next to it you have Mr Bean coffee house,...) ACADEMIC
My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
The special SAS courses (Scandinavian Area Studies) for foreign students are basic and lack some up-to-date indepth information.
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
The UIB is trying to have mixed classes now with foreign and norwegian students, this is a good start! This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

EXPENSES
The accessibility of student needs
Main source of funding:
Family Other sources of funding:
Personal savings An ERASMUS grant Work opportunities:
I didn't explore any work options Personal spending habits:
You are in a Scandinavian country! the living standard is pretty high compared to most other (European) countries. Especially alcohol and tabaco are heavily taxed! But in many occassions you get a fat discount (-50%) on display of your NORWEGIAN studentcard (trains, bus, museums, travelling arrangements,...) USE IT! Food, Travel, Nightlife, Overall, Telephone, Housing: was more expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
You are best of (and cheapest) when you stay at one of the Studenthomes of SIB (university housing dep.)I stayed at Fantoft, which is the biggest one with most international students (5km from city center). Go to Freetex for second-hand stuff to decorate your new place, or IKEA in Asane (outside Bergen, 20min. by bus) This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

OVERALL
Important to choosing this university...
I wish I had known...
I was well informed by the hostuniversity (they sended me brochures and maps for upon arrival,...) very well organised! In my opinion:
Everybody loved it, you will too!
During my experience abroad, I ...
Personal recommendation:
The university is located in a very nice city between 7 mountains and the biggest fjords of Norway (Hardanger and Sognefjord nearby!) it's beautiful I can tell you! FINAL COMMENTS
If you have time, money and made good budies to go travelling around, you should take the Interrail pass for Scandinavia! It gives you 12 days of travelling around in Norway, Sweden and Finland for a quite cheap deal! I made a 5000km trip via Oslo-Trondheim-Narvik-Helsinki-Stockholm-Oslo-Bergen, which was just fantastic! (best time to travel is may-june) This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself
