HOUSING

Personal assessment
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: On campus
Why? Living on campus was extremely convinient because I had easy access to classes and to the majority of services I need like library, laundry, pubs and I liked to live with foreign students from various countries.
Personal comments:
In general I consider my experience on campus a positive one. My room was of the right size and near to all the facilities of the university. A possible aspect to improve was a renewing of the building and of the common space like the kitchen. However the university had already started to restructur the oldest buildings. Personal social experience
Describe host city: Students equally interact with the local and student community
Activities: Takes place mostly within the university/student environment Travel: Takes place mostly outside the university/student environment Nightlife: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment Personal comments:
My favorite place in Colchester would have to be the Art Cafe in Culver Square in town centre. They have delicious cakes and a variety of teas and coffees plus you ge to see nice paintings around you. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

ACADEMIC

My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
I had veri good teachers and in general the courses where structured differently from my home university where usually I attend also 6 hours for one course a week, while in the university of Essex one course consists of nearly 3 hours for week.I appreciated the closer and less formal relation with the professor in comparison to my university.
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
In sum I think that the academic life was well organised. The structure of the courses left more space for student work.In my opinion, when there are good professors, I would have also disposed to attend more hours of a single course. Language difficulties
Language of instruction: English
Was learning English a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my English How much did you improve your English?
My level before: No problems in any areas (including slang) My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang) Personal comments:
There are a lot of International students about, so preferred spoken language was English. I was asked to attend a test at the beginning of the year, just for the assesment and afterwards given a choice of courses I could attens such as Academic Writing Skills, Vocabulary, Listening skills etc. If I wouldn't have been quite secure in my language ability, I'm sure I would've gone to some of those and would've found them helpful. The accessibility of student needs
Main source of funding:
Family Other sources of funding:
Family Work opportunities:
I didn't explore any work options Personal spending habits:
The UK is expensive, so expect higher prices in everything, but do take advantage of student prices, which help a lot, plus ask english students where to buy cheap stuff, like there is in Colchester a place called One pund shop and you can get lots of stuff for one pound. Food, Travel, Nightlife, Overall, Telephone, Housing: was more expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
Transport is REALLY expensive, prepare to pay three times what you pay at home for a normal ride on the bus. That´s why its great to live on campus, you dont use it that much, at least not daily to get to your classes. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Important to choosing this university...
I wish I had known...
I have been lucky because I came here during the summer to have a look before moving to study. It is important to know if you live on campus or off campus because then in the second case the option of having a car is fundamental! In my opinion:
Most people loved it.
During my experience abroad, I ...
Personal recommendation:
It is a wonderful place for an Erasmus experience because there is plenty of opportunities to have fun and develop new activities and interests. If you come for academic reasons then of course it depends on the quality of the specific department you are applying for! FINAL COMMENTS
The study rhythm is very intensive and demanding, expecially postgraduate. Social life is very good as well, so overall it is a place I would recommend. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself
