HOUSING
by Marieke, Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, Groningen, Netherlands
Business Studies, bilateral agreement between UF and RUG
Personal assessment
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - I had no other choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? i had very good expereinces living in an appartment. On my university only freshman lived on campus. Being in an appartment building helped me get in touch with other students
Personal comments:
compared to what I pay in the Netherlands, it was really expensive. But the location, the big pool in the courtyard, the good atmosphere and friendly management made up for all that. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

STUDENT LIFE
by Marieke, Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, Groningen, Netherlands
Business Studies, bilateral agreement between UF and RUG
Personal social experience
Describe host city: Student life dominates the city
Activities: Takes place mostly within the university/student environment Nightlife: Takes place mostly outside the university/student environment Travel: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment Personal comments:
I had lots of fun at the latin bar Rythym, but actually all the bars were great. Of course you can't miss Sarbucks, or the Java Hut on University for a good coffee. The best lunchplace was Cafe Gardens, also on University av. Besides that you can't miss the Gators if they play a home game. A nice place to relax and hang out with colleuague students is Lake Alice. You can also spot gators from your canoe or Kayak. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
No, I think they were organsed ina good way and the content was ok too
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
In the beginning I would have liked something organised for all international students. I had to find out for myself. This was also ok, but it is lways nice if the host university organises something for their guest students. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Language difficulties
Language of instruction: English
Was learning English a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my English How much did you improve your English?
My level before: Basic phrases My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang) Personal comments:
Overall, interacting with local students throughout social activities (sports, associations, class projects, friends...) helped me the most in becoming fluent and in leraning the culture. I think socialing with local students is equally important to studying well in class. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

EXPENSES
by Marieke, Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, Groningen, Netherlands
Business Studies, bilateral agreement between UF and RUG
The accessibility of student needs
Main source of funding:
Personal savings Other sources of funding:
Family Government assistance grant from the university fund Work opportunities:
It was not legal for me to work Personal spending habits:
What costs a guider in Holland, was about a dollar in the US. And a doller was 2,5 guilders at the time I was there. On the phone I spent less because local calls were free and because people from abroa called me. Telephone: was the same price as at home. Food, Travel, Nightlife, Overall, Housing: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
Yes, I had to book a new ticket home for $700!!!!! But this was partly my own fault. Cost saving tips: rent a house with people you know instead of a private lease. Buy a car together with friends. Don't go out for dinner too much! If you want to eat good food, that is really expensive. Get used to staying in one club a night instead of the (in Holland more popular) club-hopping. Important to choosing this university...
I wish I had known...
I would have known the books' prices!! it is incredibly expensive! In my opinion:
Everybody loved it, you will too!
During my experience abroad, I ...
Personal recommendation:
This is a very good university with a good quality of courses and a lot of activities in the student life. It is better to have a car to travel. FINAL COMMENTS
To travel in the state, it is better to rent a car (if you don't have one). Otherwise, there is a travel agency in the university where you can have good price for flight tickets... Gainesville is well located bacause you can esely go to Miami and south Florida, to Louisiana... A good tip: in January, the weather is not as warm as in Miami!! So don't forget warm clothes!!
