HOUSING

Personal assessment
Cost
KEY:
Couldn't have asked for more.
Pretty good.
Could've been better, but didn't lessen the overall experience.
Disappointing.
Facilities
Location
Cleanliness
Space
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? Having lived in my own apartment prior to my semester abroad, it was a bit hard for me getting used to sharing my living space with someone else like you will often do in an American dormitory.
Personal comments:
Besides of me being older than most other students in the residence hall and the fact that I was used to living by myself it was actually Ok.

STUDENT LIFE

History of Art, University Agreement
Personal social experience
Activities
KEY:
Amazing! Hardly had time to study.
Plenty to do when I had the time.
So-so.
Did not get involved.
Nightlife
Travel
Overall
Describe host city: Student life dominates the city
Activities, Nightlife, Travel: Takes place mostly within the university/student environment
Personal comments:
Iowa City is a laid back liberal town. If you get there in time for the outdoor jazz festivaland cinema nights do not miss them. The bar street,or streets! was a welcoming atmosphere for allstudents. There are lots of coffee houses to go during the day and the food is second to none in price and quality.

Could've been a bit better.
Disappointing.
Variety of courses
Availability/access to resources
Interaction with teachers
Interaction with other international students
Interaction with local students
Course recommendations:
You will have a supervisor whowillassist you in getting the courses you want, do not justsettle for second best if you want to do it go and speak to the teacher and tell them you are an international student.

My opinion of the university assessment

Language difficulties
Social
KEY:
No problems.
I coped pretty well.
Sometimes it was difficult.
It was a constant struggle.
Educational
Administrative / Institutional
Overall
Language of instruction: English
Was learning English a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my English
How much did you improve your English?
My level before: No problems in any areas (including slang)
My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang)
Personal comments:
I have studied English (combined with international studies) so English as a language of instruction was not really new to me. I did not really experience any difficulties at any point, but my stay in the US did of course further improve my skills in speech as well as in writing.

EXPENSES
by Susanne, Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien, Vienna, Austria
Business Studies, University Agreement
The accessibility of student needs
Second-hand text books
KEY:
Very easy.
Minimal effort.
Accessible but required effort.
Almost impossible.
Second-hand household items
Computers / Internet
Administrative
Money from home
Main source of funding:
Family
Other sources of funding:
Personal savings
Government assistance
Work opportunities:
I didn't want/need to work
Personal spending habits:
telephoning over the internet with skype is much cheaper, nightlife costs less than in austria or other european countries except in the bigger cities like ny, chicago or miami; travelling is cheap (flight) but the food and the hotels cost more than at home (except motels-not to recommand)
Travel, Overall, Housing: was more expensive than at home.
Food: was the same price as at home.
Nightlife, Telephone: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
telephoning via internet reservation for flights or trips only via internet (e.g. expedia), good tip is to have an american credit card (much cheaper to book on the american homepages than on the german or austrian ones) e.g. expedia.com versus expedia.de

Personal recommendation:
the campus life is awesome but the sourrounding of iowa city has not much to offer; it is absolutely necessary to travel around

FINAL COMMENTS

my most favorite things in iowa city: my laptop (absolutely necessary) digital camera headset and microphone for telephoning via internet american credit card
