PIM University of Melbourne (UM)
University of Melbourne, Parkville, VIC 3010, Australia
Description:
Established in 1853, Melbourne University was Victoria's first and Australia's second university when it opened in 1855. Its construction was made possible by the new wealth created in Victoria as a result of the gold rush. One of the early objectives was to improve the moral fibre of colonists, although equality with Sydney was just as important. The University boomed after World War 2, starting an expansion program in terms of courses and facilities that continues today and has resulted in the University of Melbourne becoming one of the largest in Victoria.

HOUSING

Personal assessment
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - I had no other choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? Privacy. Very often cheaper than staying in a college.
Personal comments:
I stayed at University City Apartments (UCA) which was very expensive. It is really easy to find nice and cheap accommodation in Melbourne so don't worry about finding a place to live beforehand. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Personal social experience
Describe host city: Students equally interact with the local and student community
Nightlife: Takes place mostly outside the university/student environment Activities, Travel: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment Personal comments:
I liked the Espy in St. Kilda, Honkey Tonk in CBD, and anywhere on Hardware St. or Lygon for food. Definately you have to go to a footy game and check out the great museums in town. The beach was awesome as well. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
Take what you are interesed in. If you don't have to take too many courses then don't, enjoy your time there.
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
It was difficult to adjust to the one exam at the end of the term vs multiple exams through the course of the class like I am used to. Study up, its tough that way. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

My English improved so much during my internship in Australia. When I came back to Belgium, my friends and my English teacher were impressed of my accent (used to have a french accent) and my fluency. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Australia is such a huge country to visit and I wouldn't have missed all the travelling for anything in the world! Great and definately worth spending all that money on. International student night life is also abundant but a big + to the overall experience. Travel, Nightlife, Overall, Housing: was more expensive than at home. Food, Telephone: was the same price as at home.

Important to choosing this university...
I wish I had known...
Yes. I wish I had known that the University of Melbourne charges the most out of all the educational institutions in the world while providing the least. I will go to Columbia next year because the cost of tuition is the same and the student faculty ratio is 1-6 compared to 1-107 in Unimelb. In my opinion:
Stay home.
During my experience abroad, I ...
Personal recommendation:
They need international reforms, they are highly overrated and their tuition is too much for what they actually provide. I could have taken a distance course and learned as much, save for the presence of Jeanette Lawrence and Nick Haslam. FINAL COMMENTS
I am posting this not as a vitriolic attack but to help and guide future students who are seriously considering this university. Ask yourself: do you want to be taught at or do you want to be in an environment that promotes ACTIVE learning and inquiry, one that doesn't teach science like a bunch of Creationist adhering to outdated canon. Go to Columbia: for the same amount of money you will be treated better, be exposed to better faculty and you will not be taught primarily by LMS and powerpoint slides.
