Get involved in one of the many student associations (NOT fraternities/ sororities) on campus; it's the best way to meet the locals fast and there's often fun opportunities to travel with these groups. Chapel Hill also offers many free lectures by visiting scientists, writers, etc. These are very much worth visiting! Read Review

Personal assessment

KEY:
Couldn't have asked for more.
Pretty good.
Could've been better, but didn't lessen the overall experience.
Disappointing.

Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: On campus
Why? While living on campus was an excellent way to interact with new people and make friends, it could be a little restricting at times sharing a room with a stranger. That said, I would probably do it again because it allowed me to get invloved in many more campus activities.
Personal comments:
It was decent houseing with everything you could possibly need e.g. kitchen, bathrooms etc.

KEY:
Amazing! Hardly had time to study.
Plenty to do when I had the time.
So-so.
Did not get involved.

Overall
Describe host city: Student life dominates the city
Activities: Takes place mostly within the university/student environment
Nightlife: Takes place mostly outside the university/student environment
Travel: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment
Personal comments:
There was a great Jazz cafe, called Henry's, which had life music every Tuesday. There were many international students but also many Americans. The atmosphere was always great, very laid back. Chapel Hill also has a host of wonderful, slightly alternative, privately owned (no chains!) lunch cafe's and coffee houses.

ACADEMIC

My academic experiences
Quality of courses
KEY:
Fantastic.
Pretty good.
Could've been a bit better.
Disappointing.
Variety of courses
Availability/access to resources
Interaction with teachers
Interaction with other international students
Interaction with local students
Course recommendations:
The courses at Chapel Hill are very high quality. The teachers are well qualified and really interact with their students. The classes offered were of a higher stage than where my studies were up to back home, but I managed to adapt quite easily.

My opinion of the university assessment
Exams at end of course
KEY:
Liked it.
It was alright.
A bit annoying.
Didn't like it.
Exams throughout the course
Essays and/or projects at the end of course.
Essays and/or projects throughout the course
Overall
Personal comments:
Yes. Lectures were compulsory and only two could be missed throughout the semester. This would have been fine, if it were not for the fact that international students are entered into classes last and therefore get the least favoured pick of class times. I was therefore stuck with classes starting 9am or earlier all five weekdays! I would suggest international students be given special consideration in terms of picking class times, perhaps with preferences given earlier.

Language of instruction: English
Was learning English a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't.
Personal comments:
I did not struggle with this aspect at all as English is my native language. I was friends with quite afew international students from Europe and they seemed to adapt quite well to the teaching styles and interacting with English speakers.

The accessibility of student needs
Second-hand text books
KEY:
Very easy.
Minimal effort.
Accessible but required effort.
Almost impossible.
Second-hand household items
Computers / Internet
Administrative
Money from home
Main source of funding:
Personal savings
Other sources of funding:
Family
Government assistance
Work opportunities:
It was not legal for me to work
Personal spending habits:
On campus housing cost quite abit more than my apartment at home. There really aren't any cooking facilities in the dorms, so students go out for food much more than at home; naturally that is more expensive. The night life in Chapel Hill doesn't begin to compare to Groningen, so I spent much less on going out. On the other hand, I spent much more on travel because I wanted to see as much of the US as possible while I was there.
Food, Travel, Housing: was more expensive than at home.
Nightlife, Overall: was the same price as at home.
Telephone: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
none

I wish I had known...
No. There were definetely surprises, though these were all interesting parts of the learning experience.
In my opinion:
Most people loved it.

During my experience abroad, I ...
Became familiar with another culture
KEY:
Happened all the time.
Happened quite a lot.
Happened a bit.
Didn't happen.
Traveled
Improved language skills
Met people from other countries
Became more independent
Partied a lot
Experienced a change in life
Advanced my studies/career
Personal recommendation:
I believe Chapel Hill to be an excellent university in terms of both academic and social aspects. It is quite isolated which means the student is forced to spend a large amount of time there though this added to the sense of community. Students should be aware when attending universities in typically 'southern' states of some prejudices towards religious beliefs and homosexuality. That said I had friends of different religions and of homosexual orientation who still very much enjoyed their time.

FINAL COMMENTS

Try not to plan travel too muh as you will meet friends at the host university and you're plans will probably change. Explore the country (and surrounding countries) as much as you can while away as it will give you a broader picture of the culture. Also research your host university and it's offered activities before leaving. And lastly, realise their culture may not be just like yours and try to adapt as much as possible. It's all part of the experience.
