HOUSING

Personal assessment
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - I had no other choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? Because I have known the life in the campus through my friends: sometimes there is too mess and too people. Besides I like to be independent and to take about myself on my own: a life with a family could conditionate me.
Personal comments:
The host University could not guarantee an accomadation for all the erasmus students but just for half semester exchange students. By the way they have arranged a "welcome programme" (very well organised!)during which they helped us tomeet others students, choosing our "future flatmate" and find a flat for all the year long. STUDENT LIFE
by Valentina, Università degli Studi di Siena, Siena, Italy
Communication and Information Sciences, Erasmus
Personal social experience
Describe host city: Student life dominates the city
Activities: Takes place mostly within the university/student environment Nightlife, Travel: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment Personal comments:
During the week I was working in a pub:"the three Wheatcheaves" so my friends and I were using to spend some nights there. Otherwise on Tuesday night we were going to a disco "the Cube".During the week end there were always some Erasmus party organised by students in their own flat. Others two nice places were the pub of the University"the Ark"(in the campus) and "Pitcher and piano" a nice pub built inside an old church.( in the city centre) This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
I think the contents of the courses I took was up to date and this should continue but the practical fieldwork slots should be increased so that student get a full grasp of the concepts in the real world
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
For the MSc Environmental Engineering course more practical work and field work should be slotted in.The course should be done in 18months rather than 12 months to give students the opportunity to undertake re research work This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Language difficulties
Language of instruction: English
Was learning English a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't. Personal comments:
It was hard at the beginning. I thought that my level of English is quite good when I studied at my home University. However, when I went to the UK I realised that there is still a lot of work to do. Firstly, you have to get used to the local accent. Secondly, speaking English every day puts pressure to broaden your vocabulary. (I guess, I learnt about 2000 new words in the first 12 weeks, but it calms down after few weeks.) This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

EXPENSES

The accessibility of student needs
Main source of funding:
A private grant Other sources of funding:
Family Work opportunities:
I worked during my study abroad experience Personal spending habits:
The currency exchange makes everything in UK very expensive compared to my country. Food, Travel, Nightlife, Overall, Telephone, Housing: was more expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
Maintain only 1 bank and 1 credit card. Go to cheaper supermarket (ASDA and TESCO). Get student discount cards (train, bus). Wait for sale seasons for price cut in most of the items especially clothes and shoes. Go to car boot sale if you have transport. Important to choosing this university...
I wish I had known...
Maybe it would have been better to know many things before coming here, but I think you can access all the information you need in the right moment. In my opinion:
Everybody loved it, you will too!
During my experience abroad, I ...
Personal recommendation:
It is one of the best universities in the United Kingdom, and the city has very good location. Many international students and a lot of student parties. FINAL COMMENTS
It is better to live in a private accomodation outside but near the campus. It is cheaper to use the bus to come to the city from the airport, but train is faster. If you plan to travel during the period you will stay here, it will be a very good idea to buy the bus/train discount card to save money.
