University of Oxford, Wellington Square, OX1 2JD OXFORD, United Kingdom
4.10 / 5 based on 144 reviews.
Description:
Oxford is a unique and historic institution. As the oldest English-speaking university in the world, it lays claim to eight centuries of continuous existence.
Since WWII, Oxford has added to its humanistic core a major new research capacity in the natural and applied sciences, including medicine. In so doing, it has enhanced and strengthened its traditional role as a focus for learning and a forum for intellectual debate.

Disappointing.

Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? I attended Oxford as an undergraduate; now that I have both Bachelor's and Master's degree, I feel living independently would be best.
Personal comments:
We stayed in single-room houses at St. Anne's College, and had access to the libraries at Oxford, as well as the dining facilities at St. Anne's. In many respects, we had all the advantages of a typical St. Anne's student.

Personal comments:
I didn't really have a favorite pub or cafe in Oxford, because I tried to go to as many different places as possible while I was there. Everything was great!

make sure you know in advance, which tutors you have in your tutorials. this is where you can learn a lot (or not!) while lectures are rather poor.

Was learning English a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't.

No problem. The English slang was hard to understand sometimes, but that's half the fun of studying abroad!

Other sources of funding:

Personal spending habits:
The US dollar is extremely weak in comparison with the British pound, so everything in the UK costs about double what it would in the USA.
Food, Travel, Nightlife, Overall, Telephone, Housing: was more expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
If you're going to travel in the UK and will be here for more than 6 months, buy a Young Persons Railcard. It costs £20 for the year and gets you a third off of any ticket. Also, buses are a bit slower, but considerably cheaper. Don't shop for all of your groceries at a Sainsbury Local or Express or at Marks and Spencer. Try to find a Co-op or Tesco. For toiletry and household items try Superdrug before Boots. Always ask if a store gives a student discount (clothing stores, restaurants, and hair salons included).
