HOUSING

Personal assessment
Cost
KEY:
Couldn't have asked for more.
Pretty good.
Could've been better, but didn't lessen the overall experience.
Disappointing.
Facilities
Location
Cleanliness
Space
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? To get the opportunity to meet local people.
Personal comments:
I lived on campus, in Horlock Court. The student union shop, HSBC bank, the university bookshop and the laundrette were located on Horlock complex, and adjacent to it was the sports centre, which was really convenient. My bedroom was supplied with high speed internet broad band internet access and I had my own phone. About the fees: it was a bit expensive but it was worth it. I really enjoyed living there.

Plenty to do when I had the time.
So-so.

Overall
Describe host city: Student life dominates the city
Activities, Nightlife, Travel: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment
Personal comments:
Manchester is a very big city so...there is plenty of stuff to do. Night life is quite exiting because you can go out clubbing every night if you want to! That´s really cool. As I said before thought I live in Salford it only takes me 15 minutes walking to get to Manchester center. The are plenty of clubs to go but it depends on which kinda music do you like. For example I do like salsa, hip hop, R&B, rap, soul... you know, all this kind of stuff. So... I tend to go to "Ponana! or "Havana" or "Copa Cabana" or "La tasca" but if you do like house or techno don´t worry...you have a huge variety of places to go. Best cafe... mmmmm I would say "Cafe Nero" it is very expensive but...it is worth it. "Starbucks" it is quite ok as well. Events or places... well..as you know in Mancehster there is Manchester United so... if you do like football you cannot miss to go to "Trafford Center". Filmworks is a chain of cinemas and it is really cool to go there. As student you have discounts from monday to thrusday so... it is good going there or to the Theatre. In Manchester there are plenty of restaurants from eveywhere. China town is where all the chinesse restauyrants are but... it is very expensive. Manchester is full of Italian restaurants and the food is great... I do like a very small italian restaturant called "Don Giovanis" and it is in Oxford Road, one of the main roads in Mancehster center... that restaurant it is very nice and the people who work there are very friendly...I go there for a meal very often. And... I think that this is all. Manchester is a very industrial city amnd the weather is crap, you knwo, cloudy and rainy but...it is ok. You get used ti it and...at the end...you love that city!

My academic experiences
Quality of courses
KEY:
Fantastic.
Pretty good.
Could've been a bit better.
Disappointing.
Variety of courses
Availability/access to resources
Interaction with teachers
Interaction with other international students
Interaction with local students
Course recommendations:
My course is great. I am doing BSc honors degree in Business Studies and Marketing Mangement and... I do really enjoy it, especially in my final year. We have a lot of seminars and you learn so much there. The final year is fantastic but... the second year, it was the year I got in because I had a degree already and in my opinion it wasn´t that good. We had big lectures with 400 students there so...it was not easy to learn and to listen because of the noise. I would recommend them to split the class, to make the group smaller so that it would be easier to listen and the most important thing: to learn. But it is to say that my couse is very common so...many people study that. By contrast, if you do languages to say so...the group is much more smaller like...15 o 30 people which is great.

My opinion of the university assessment
Exams at end of course
KEY:
Liked it.
It was alright.
A bit annoying.
Didn't like it.
Exams throughout the course
Essays and/or projects at the end of course.
Essays and/or projects throughout the course
Overall
Personal comments:
As I said before the only thing I would improve would be be to reduce the people in a lecture. The rest of it, it sounds quite "ok" to me though is not perfect, you know, paper work and all this stuff. But this happens to everywhere, doesn´t it? Administration office in the busniness department can be disaponting sometimes. That´s how it woks there. But thanks God that most of my professors are very good at teaching! specially this year.

Language of instruction: English
Was learning English a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my English
How much did you improve your English?
My level before: At ease in most situations
My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang)
Personal comments:
I was lucky. My Engish was wuite allright when I came to Manchester cause I did travell abroad a few summers before I started my second degree in UK. My English has improved so much since I came to Manchester though my English was quite ok when I first came. I am a quite open person so I didn´t have that much difficulties to get into the local people. I do work there and I do get on with the English culture now, after living there two years. It took me time to get used to it becsue I come from a very different counntry like Spain, Barcelona. But I survived! I really did.

Other sources of funding:

Work opportunities:

Personal spending habits:
Why? well, the stand of living in Uk is completely different than the spanish one. UK is a very expensive country, specially if you live in the third biggest city of the Island. Tobacco, alcohol, taxis, food, academic books... my God! It is really expensive. As student you are in trouble if you don´t get a job to pay at least something. You know...I felt guilty that my family had to pay me eveything thing, like flights, accomodation, food...so I decided to get a job there for two reasons, for the money but to fill up my spare time. In Manchester is easy to get a part time job, so my advise to you is not to worry about it.You will be fine.
Food, Travel, Nightlife, Overall, Telephone, Housing: was more expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
Cost-savingP^Not at all. As I pointed out before. UK is expensive so... if you want to study there you need a good grant or... your family have to be wealthy.

I wish I had known...
Huh... If I knew that Salford was a very dangerous place to live...I woulnd´t have gone there I would either move to Manchester or...I would go to the south of England where the stand of living is much better and the sun comes up more often!.
In my opinion:
I loved it but I'm not sure everybody would.

During my experience abroad, I ...
Became familiar with another culture
KEY:
Happened all the time.
Happened quite a lot.
Happened a bit.
Didn't happen.
Traveled
Improved language skills
Met people from other countries
Became more independent
Partied a lot
Experienced a change in life
Advanced my studies/career
Personal recommendation:
If you want to study in University of Salford it must be because of the course. The education in this University is great but...not the area I am afraid. If you go to University of Salford, do me a favor, move to Manchester for God Sake! It is too scary to live in Salford down to the famous "Seaford Road", believe me you don´t wanna know what happens in that road when is dark at night...
