4.71 / 5 based on 6 reviews.
Description:
Founded in 1956 as the first U.S. university to be created wholly in the 20th century, the University of South Florida is now the largest metropolitan university in the Southeastern United States, with a student body of nearly 35,500 spread across four campuses.

But USF is much more than just a large, state-assisted institution. Its growing reputation as a dynamic research university is spreading around the country, attracting more and more of the nation's best and brightest scholars to the Tampa Bay Area.

KEY:
Couldn't have asked for more.
Pretty good.
Could've been better, but didn't lessen the overall experience.
Disappointing.

Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - I had no other choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? Because i had the chance to interact with people from other backgrounds rather than just academic.
Personal comments:
At the University of South Florida on- campus accomodation provided all the services, ammenities and entertainment facilities necessary. There was a wide range of options from which to choose and staff was particularly decicated a helpfull. I was mostly impressed by the organisation and reliability of the application procedures.

Amazing! Hardly had time to study.
Plenty to do when I had the time.
So-so.
Did not get involved.
Nightlife
Travel
Overall
Describe host city: Students equally interact with the local and student community
Nightlife: Takes place mostly outside the university/student environment
Activities, Travel: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment
Personal comments:
The best places to go in Tampa are Ybor city for a busy night and sophisticated lunches. Ybor City is a historical location that has been sucessfuly integrated in the ciy's urban planning strategy: it used to be a Cuban cigars factory and nowadays has some of the funkiest restaurants and retail stores in Tampa. Colombia is my favourite restaurant in Ybor, on thursdays they have live flamenco dancers, its a great atmosphere! Gasparilla Festival should not be missed; Bahasa and Hyde Park Cafe for Latin Music; McDinttons for an European-pub feel and Westshore to enjoy the bay view and some of Tampa's best houses.

Personal comments:
I personally believe that my academic experience could have been better if classes included research and critical analysis in their assessment requirements. The American Undergradute Educaton system focus on descriptive explanations and that can somehow restrict the development of critical thinking. I think that more essays and group assignments should be included in the academic programs.

Overall
Language of instruction: English
Was learning English a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my English
How much did you improve your English?
My level before: At ease in most situations
My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang)
Personal comments:
Even though i was proficient in english when i arrived the US, in my first 1-2 months American English honestly felt like a complete new language. The pace, tone and even emotion with wich native americans speak is very particular but such problems were quickly overcomed. I had an active social life and was part of many students associatons which allowed me to better understand information. Lecturers were extremelly clear and willing to help and such played a determinant role in my academic performance.
