University of Strathclyde, George Street 50, G1 1QE Glasgow, United Kingdom
Description:
The University of Strathclyde was founded in 1796 as Anderson's Institution. From its foundation the University was different from the other, much older, universities in Britain; it aimed at a wider range of students and a broader variety of subjects, especially those concerned with 'useful learning'. The University of Strathclyde has two campuses: the John Anderson Campus in the centre of Glasgow, where the Faculties of Arts and Social Sciences, Engineering, Science and the Strathclyde Business School are located, and the Jordanhill Campus, with our Faculty of Education, in the west end of the city.

HOUSING

Personal assessment
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: On campus
Why? I would like to live in between students to get a feeling of university life.
Personal comments:
Before coming here i thought my room in the university accommodation is big(as seen in the photograph of university brochure). But the rooms here are so small i feel like living in a prison. At the same time i feel my university is charging us more than other universities with the same facilities. But the good thing here is we have a phone in every bedroom and is free to use in the campus network as well as a high sped internet connection which is also free to use from my bedroom. STUDENT LIFE
by Leonardo, LUISS, Rome, Italy

Personal social experience
Describe host city: Students equally interact with the local and student community
Activities: Takes place mostly within the university/student environment Nightlife, Travel: Takes place mostly outside the university/student environment Personal comments:
It is a long time I was in Glasgow, unfortunately I do not remeber the names of the best night spots. Anyway it was very easy to find them, just asking to the students were studying there for a long time. I suggest the area around Buchannan Street, going in the direction to the Glasgow University. ACADEMIC

My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
If you do a Postgraduate course then you pretty much have no choice what courses to take. The quality of teaching is a bit dissapointing as its really theoretical and not at all practial. Teachers dont have the same marking standards and thus your grades tend to fluctuate. Teachers dont seem to be very eager to help, but this depends on the teacher and department I guess..
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
As I said before, teachers have different marking standards and thus I didnt really like it.. Exams were packed into one week giving you little time to revise and prepare. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Language difficulties
Language of instruction: English
Was learning English a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my English How much did you improve your English?
My level before: Basic phrases My level after: At ease in most situations Personal comments:
Scottish accent is very strong, so surely you will find problem to understand what local people are saying at the first time. As the university classes I attended were directed mainly by Scottish Professors, at the beginning it was complicated, but just a bit later I started to imporve the listening. And do not forget that Scottish are much more friendly than English!!! They will help you by repeat the word and try to use different words you are more confortable. Main source of funding:
Family Other sources of funding:
Family Partial University Scholarship Work opportunities:
I worked during my study abroad experience Personal spending habits:
I spend more on telephone as i need to talk home very often as this is the first time i am coming out from home.Accommodation is any way very expensive and i should not compare it to my home country India prices.I also spend much on travelling as i always like travelling and in addition i found this Scottish countryside amazing. Travel, Telephone, Housing: was more expensive than at home. Food, Overall: was the same price as at home. Nightlife: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
Don't do shopping in small ones.Do only in big stores in particular in the discount stores like LIDL,ASDA.Try to prepare your own food as outside food is very expensive. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Important to choosing this university...
I wish I had known...
I wish I was warned of the racist behaviour of those professors in there. In my opinion:
Stay home.
During my experience abroad, I ...
Personal recommendation:
I faced major humiliation and injustice in their hands just because I am from India and so did many such people from various courses in this University. Before you choose this University I would suggest you please go through my detailed experience I had there..which is in my blog: http://racismscotland.wordpress.com FINAL COMMENTS
Never choose this University. Actually Caledonian is a good University for nternational Students because its too friendly..Strathclyde sucks! This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself
