Avoid Jumping Jaks like the plague, although it can be tempting with the a free bus to take you there and free champagne at the door. But its trashy as hell. For clubs: I like ABC (good indie gigs, good music, huge venue) on Suchiehall St. especially on Thursdays/Fridays, Buff Club (good DJ's, great atmosphere)on Suchiehall Lane specially on a Sunday, Art School on Renfrew St. for very cheap Saturday nights, and of course the Strathclyde Union (great theme nights, so close). The Garage is good for a drunk cheesy laugh, especially on Sunday/Monday nights. Use Be-lo in moderation...there's a lot of shady people there and the scene can get old. But good on a Wednesday. Basically you could go out every night and have an amazing time. Be sure to check out Ashton Lane in W. End too...like Wodka Vodka. For PUBS: Nice n'Sleazy's has great open mic nights on Mondays. I also really like Bunker, Revolution, 13th Note, Bloc, Kushion, Stavka, Underworld. Check them out. Very good night.

Housing
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: On campus
Why?
You meet tons of people. A diverse crowd from all over the world. Everybody's friendly and open to everything. Great experience. Off campus can be cheaper with more space but trade offs are isolation from the rest of the students and you can be far away from campus. Don't miss anything. Live on campus!

To be honest I spent a lot of money going out, enjoying myself...boozing, partying. It got a little bit rough at the end as I ran out of money, but me & some friends got under the table part-time gigs at The Thistle Hotel. Who by the way will hire anyone for their catering services. Its pretty good pay, you make your own hours...usually weeknights 6-10pm, and do very little. They need help starting April for events. Just show up to the main ballroom at 6pm, wear black trousers, white shirt, black shoes, bring bank details and your set. They will not look at your passport to see if your legal. Guaranteed. If your really skint, try working at the club, The Garage, they also will hire anyone but the hours are horrible (10pm-4am) and the work is pretty rough. People usually last about a month, then quit out of exhaustion with that job. But whatever to pay the bills! Good luck!

Not really. Get a mobile phone with pay as you go, dont get a phonecard. Its definitely worth it. Phonecards suck. See if your bank charges for international transactions. Mine did. Also you don't have to bring a computer. Its not neccesary, so much socializing, so little studying and you won't be missing your friends/family back home for constant emailing/messaging. Trust me. Bring an Ipod/mp3 player for your music.

Academic
Course recommendations
I had a nightmare with choosing classes and ended up taking freshman level classes that didn't really help with my degree. Nightmare. I ended up just losing interest, never attending class, not studying and flunking a few exams. I should have gone over prospective courses in depth with an advisor.

I wish I had known...
Not to worry, its going to be a fantastic time. Great experience, go for a year not a semester. You might even want to transfer afterwards. I went back after for a year of work placement.

If you can get sober enough to book some bus tickets, do. Scotland's amazingly beautiful...the buses around the country are the cheapest option and are scenic. Give Edinburgh a go for a weekend, Sterling & Callander for a day trip, Inverness, Skye, hire a car and go camping with your friends for a few days. Also there are some cool places just outside of Glasgow to see for a day, the Trossachs, Loch Lomond, Arran Island etc. If you want to get out of Scotland, theres plenty of cheap flights/holidays out to mainland Europe via ryanair and easyjet. So then you and all your new friends can go on holiday together. Have fun!

It was great. I had a Glaswegian flatmate that did great impressions of the junkies and NEDS. I learned to imitate the accent. Great party trick.
