KEY:
Couldn't have asked for more.
Pretty good.
Could've been better, but didn't lessen the overall experience.
Disappointing.

Type of housing: With a family
Arranged by: Independently - My choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? Same advantages as living with a family. But for the second time you don't really need support from your host family. You're more independent when living in an own apartment.
Personal comments:
Most International Students lived in accomodations provided by the university. Generally , Australian accomodation is slightly more expensive than accomodation in Germany. Living in a family was the best choice to start with in a foreign country.

KEY:
Amazing! Hardly had time to study.
Plenty to do when I had the time.
So-so.
Did not get involved.

Travel
Overall
Describe host city: Students interact with the local community without much university involvement
Nightlife: Takes place mostly outside the university/student environment
Activities, Travel: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment
Personal comments:
Inside info? You wouldn't have time to listen to all my recommendations. It's amazing how much I learnt during two semesters in Sydney. If you wonna know anything in detail let me know. Just to start with: The best pub not to be missed is definitely the famous 'Friend In Hand'-Pub in Glebe.

Pretty good.
Could've been a bit better.
Disappointing.
Variety of courses
Availability/access to resources
Interaction with teachers
Interaction with other international students
Interaction with local students
Course recommendations:
Courses are very important, but for me the most important and the best way to learn, is with the homeworks.

My opinion of the university assessment
Exams at end of course
KEY:
Liked it.
It was alright.
A bit annoying.
Didn't like it.
Exams throughout the course
Essays and/or projects at the end of course.

Personal comments:
Maybe to mixt more the international and local students. All my best friends were international students, it´s maybe a pitty that I haven´t met a lot of Australian students.

Language of instruction: English
Was learning English a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my English
How much did you improve your English?
My level before: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.)
My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang)
Personal comments:
After having arrived in Australia I noticed very soon that the Australian language does have differences to the formal British or American English you learn at school or university, respectively. But I coped pretty well, and after a couple of weeks you really get used to it.

EXPENSES

The accessibility of student needs
Second-hand text books
KEY:
Very easy.
Minimal effort.
Accessible but required effort.
Almost impossible.
Second-hand household items
Computers / Internet
Administrative
Money from home
Main source of funding:
Government assistance
Other sources of funding:
Family
Personal savings
AU$8000-prize
Work opportunities:
I didn't explore any work options
Personal spending habits:
While being in a foreign country you just don't think about expenses as carefully as in your home country. So I spent more money, especially for travelling and nightlife.
Travel, Nightlife, Overall, Housing: was more expensive than at home.
Food, Telephone: was the same price as at home.
Personal comments:
It takes a couple of days/weeks to organize a money transaction from your home country to your bank account. A credit card is necessary in many situations. And: If you do spent time on looking for cheap options regarding travelling, going out, you can save money. Internet is a powerful and very useful institution in Australia!

I wish I had known...
If I knew how great my year 2001 would become I definitely would have tried to arrange a longer stay!
In my opinion:
Everybody loved it, you will too!

During my experience abroad, I ...
Became familiar with another culture
KEY:
Happened all the time.
Happened quite a lot.
Happened a bit.
Didn't happen.
Traveled
Improved language skills
Met people from other countries
Became more independent
Partied a lot
Experienced a change in life
Advanced my studies/career
Personal recommendation:
The 'University of Sydney' has about 35000 local students. Additionally, there are about 3500 international students every semester. The administration really cares about you and you come to know to many people from all parts of this world - not only at university, but also in town. It's a multi-culti population.

FINAL COMMENTS

I took about 2000 pictures, made several videos, met incredible people, travelled almost whole Australia and did all kinds of crazy stuff. I'll never forget the best year of my life! If I start talking about 2001 I just can't stop...
