University of Vermont (UVM)
University of Vermont, Office of Undergraduate Admissions, 194 South Prospect Street, Burlington, VT 05401, U.S.A., United States
Description:
Uvm was chartered in 1791 (the same year that Vermont became the 14th state in the union). It was the first college or university in the country to declare in its charter that the "rules, regulations, and by-laws shall not tend to give preference to any religious sect or denomination whatsoever" -- a clear assertion of UVM's commitment to equality and enlightenment. The primary purpose of The University of Vermont is to create and share knowledge. UVM prepares its students to live productive, responsible, and creative lives through a high quality, liberal education. As a research university, UVM endorses the intrinsic value of the creation of new knowledge and promotes the application of relevant knowledge to benefit a multi-dimensional and global society.

HOUSING
by Olga, Belarussian State University, Minsk, Belarus

Personal assessment
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? the cost is the same as in dorms, but there's more privacy and space, and ocation is perfect
Personal comments:
Accomodation provided for international students is okay, we have all the neccessary facilities including laundry and free parking in the area. However for American students University provides accomodation only for the freshmen and softmores, all the others are to look for the housing themselves. STUDENT LIFE

Personal social experience
Describe host city: Student life dominates the city
Activities: Takes place mostly within the university/student environment Nightlife, Travel: Takes place mostly outside the university/student environment Personal comments:
Coming from a big European City Burlington bars might be a little disappointing, there are a couple, but most of them look the same. No clubs or places to "dance", no good places for music/concerts (exception: Metronome on Main St. and Higher Ground in Winooski).Don´t get me wrong, you definitely can go out at night, but do not expect a great variety. As of what I have heard pretty good for American standards though, there are definitely many more much more boring places than Burlington! ACADEMIC

My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
For international students it is much easier to get enrolled into any course than for Americans. However UVM beurocracy makes it a little more difficult, because there are so many persons you need to talk about taking anyclass, so that when you are about signing in, it is already full.
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
smaller size of classes, probably. There are too many students in foreign language classes, so we don't really work personally. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Language difficulties
Language of instruction: English
Was learning English a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't. How much did you improve your English?
My level before: At ease in most situations My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang) Personal comments:
In the beginning it was more difficult, because I was not used to speciefic lexics (like linguistic, judicial), but in a couple of months I made a big improvement, and now I don't have any problems with English at all. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Family Other sources of funding:
WU scholarship Work opportunities:
I didn't want/need to work Personal spending habits:
Ate more, called all over the world and all over the US, Housing was just a lot more expensive, and i did a lot of travelling, including rental cars etc. Food, Travel, Overall, Telephone, Housing: was more expensive than at home. Nightlife: was the same price as at home.
Personal comments:
A semester in the US just is expensive, remember the students there spend a multiple of what you will be spending. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Important to choosing this university...
I wish I had known...
The temperature! We had an amazingly cold winter there (worst since 78 or something). Normally I do not care about that, but the cold weather really limited people in going out of there apartment, nobody wanted to go somewhere. This made thins a little boring. In my opinion:
Most people loved it.
During my experience abroad, I ...
Personal recommendation:
It is a small(er) town in every respect. FINAL COMMENTS
You can definitely have fun at UVM! Interact with other students, and you will enjoy it. The countryside is very beautiful, and it is very easy (because it is close) to go to Canada. Especially Montreal is worth a trip, if you feel trapped in Burlington, go there, it is only two hours away. (They speak French there, but it is no problems getting around with English, many American kids go up there to drink anyway.) This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself
