HOUSING
by olivia, IFI Rouen, Rouen, France
Business Studies, Independent
Personal assessment
Cost
KEY:
Couldn't have asked for more.
Pretty good.
Could've been better, but didn't lessen the overall experience.
Disappointing.
Facilities
Location
Cleanliness
Space
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - My choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? BECAUSE IT IS THE EASIEST TO FIND. TO LIVE ON CAMPUS ONE HAS TO BOOK A ROOM AT LEAST ONE YEAR BEFORE
Personal comments:
HOUSING WAS JUST FINE. RIGHT IN THE CENTER OF TOWN. OLD HOTEL ROOMS IN COURSE OF RENOVATION WHERE ALL EXCHANGE STUDENTS LIVE. VERY GOOD LOCATION, NEXT TO ALL THE BUSLINE. VERY PRACTICAL.

STUDENT LIFE
by Michael, Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien, Vienna, Austria
Business Studies, University Agreement
Personal social experience
Activities
KEY:
Amazing! Hardly had time to study.
Plenty to do when I had the time.
So-so.
Did not get involved.
Nightlife
Travel
Overall
Describe host city: Student life dominates the city
Activities, Nightlife, Travel: Takes place mostly within the university/student environment
Personal comments:
Activities: Ask the HBAA exchange coordinators for everything (especially setting up intramural sport teams) Nightlife: Everything is on or near richmond street. Specials: Monday: Martini Bar Tuesday: Molly Blooms Wednesday: Jim Bobs Thursday: Jacks or Phoenix Friday: GT's or Phoenix Saturday: Jacks Others: TJ Baxters, Barney's, Ceeps, Richmond Tavern, Salt Lounge, Poacher's Arms, Brass Door, Call the office. And don't forget Stobies Pizza afterwards. Travel: Cheapest and most flexible way is to take 5 people and rent a full size car (minivans only for people older than 25) Chicago is 7 hours drive, New york 9 hours, Toronot 2 hours, Montreal 8 hours, Quebec 10,5 hours, Ottawa 8 hours. Take your time and see as much as possible! All in all: It is amazing! Enjoy!

ACADEMIC

My academic experiences
Quality of courses
KEY:
Fantastic.
Pretty good.
Could've been a bit better.
Disappointing.
Variety of courses
Availability/access to resources
Interaction with teachers
Interaction with other international students
Interaction with local students
Course recommendations:
This school teaches case method, not lectures. This means that the students discuss a case and the teacher guides the discussion and draws it to all the important points. Especially if you are used to lecture style a nice and different way. It definitely needs more preparation work and you have to contribute in class for your grade. (Sometimes up to 50%)

My opinion of the university assessment
Exams at end of course
KEY:
Liked it.
It was alright.
A bit annoying.
Didn't like it.
Exams throughout the course
Essays and/or projects at the end of course.
Essays and/or projects throughout the course
Overall
Personal comments:
Nope, the Richard Ivey Business school at UWO is a great university and deserves its place among the top 25. Follow their slogan: Work hard, play hard!

Language difficulties
Social
KEY:
No problems.
I coped pretty well.
Sometimes it was difficult.
It was a constant struggle.
Educational
Administrative / Institutional
Overall
Language of instruction: English
Was learning English a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't.
How much did you improve your English?
My level before: At ease in most situations
My level after: At ease in most situations
Personal comments:
The "Case-method" really forces you to speak and contribute to the classes. That makes it easy to feel quite comfortable in the English language after a short period of time. Though, if any problems might occur, everyone was extremly helpful!

EXPENSES
by Michael, Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien, Vienna, Austria
Business Studies, University Agreement
The accessibility of student needs
Second-hand text books
KEY:
Very easy.
Minimal effort.
Accessible but required effort.
Almost impossible.
Second-hand household items
Computers / Internet
Administrative
Money from home
Main source of funding:
Personal savings
Other sources of funding:
Family
Government assistance
University grant
Work opportunities:
It was not legal for me to work
Personal spending habits:
Food depends on what you eat. Fast food is a lot cheaper but quality food a lot more expensive. I did not use my cell phone over there as the cell phone function is replaced by MSN. And for all other calls I used Skypeout (Function in skype where you can call wireline phones very cheap, u only need internet and a headset) Housing is around 500 CAD/month. Nightlife: A beer is around 4-4,5 CAD, order pitcher for 13 CAD. Cheapest is to take a car with several people. Fuel is very cheap compared to europe. Pay attention where the US highways collect toll. Internet is around 30$/months
Nightlife, Housing: was more expensive than at home.
Overall: was the same price as at home.
Food, Travel, Telephone: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
Don't expecet too much from canadian banking services. They take money for using banking cards and don't provide real online banking. You won't need a bank account there if you have a credit card and a banking card with maestro. Always withdraw great amounts (600CAD) to keep transaction costs low. University material (Case and Textbooks)is expensive like hell, but you cannot do anything about it as they are produced for you personally. Don't buy stuff in variety stores, they are also very expensive. If you smoke, buy cigarets on trips to the us they are cheaper and much better (1 Package Canadian ones are 7,25CAD)
