HOUSING

Personal assessment
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Home university
If returning, I would choose: On campus
Why? Pretty much the only option available for exchange students, and offers by far the most amazing student life experience.
Personal comments:
There are several student residences around the city to choose from, varying in size and location. I can only speak from my perspective but if you are looking to meet loads of people and experience student life like none other, go for Flogsta. Depsite being the furthest from the city center, Flogsta has made its reputation over the years: 10 buildings of student housing with more than 150 students per building (local and exchange) means it gets wild. Rooftop parties, corridor parties, sauna parties, you name it. While it does get out of hand from time to time, it is generally the best experience you can have in Uppsala, the proximity to other students means you're always meeting new people, and there are always plenty of activities going on. Unless you need an extremely calm working environement, look no further. Facilities are good with washer/dryer machines, bus connections, ICA supermarket, convenience shop and sport center all close by. STUDENT LIFE

Personal social experience
Describe host city: Student life dominates the city
Activities, Nightlife: Takes place mostly within the university/student environment Travel: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment Personal comments:
Well, where to begin?! I was a member of Ostgota Nation, a fairly alternative nation in a beautiful old house with a great bar and great food. It was a smaller nation than some of the others, but I liked that. There are particular nights when everyone goes to certain nations: eg. Wednesday - Ostgota, V-Dala (disco music), Thursday - Kalmar (great groovy tunes), Stockholm (techno), Friday - Varmlands, Saturday - V-Dala. The cafes in the nations are the best value for students. Great cakes and sandwiches and Swedish treats. Again different nations are open certain days. I didn't really venture out into the town for bars or restaurants, as it was way too expensive in comparison. As for events not to be missed - well, I would say Valborg except that I missed it! The Spring and Autumn balls are also really popular and a big deal. Other small ... This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

ACADEMIC

My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
Professor Iain Cameron is a bit of hard task master but his course in International Law was inspirational. Don't take this course if you want to party. Do take this course if you want to discover a very fluid, constantly changing, challenging and very rewarding area of law. I would especially recommend it if you are interested in international affairs and politics.
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
Not really. If you want to study then you can reach your potential and more, if not then you can enjoy the great parties. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Language difficulties
Language of instruction: Swedish
Was learning Swedish a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't. How much did you improve your Swedish?
My level before: At ease in most situations My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang) Personal comments:
This was an excellent experience for me, but bear in mind that Swedish was one of my majors at my home University. I believe other Exchange Students might not have enjoyed the social scene as much as I did, due to the language factor. But Swedes in general have an excellent ability to speak English. They are open and friendly to people from other cultures (especially Australia and New Zealand), and I struggle to believe anyone from anywhere couldn't live, cope and enjoy themselves there. EXPENSES

The accessibility of student needs
Main source of funding:
Personal savings Other sources of funding:
Family Government assistance Home university grant Work opportunities:
I worked, but it was illegal/cash in hand work Personal spending habits:
There were so many opportunities to do new and exciting activities that obviously cost money - I found it difficult to say no on many occassions. At home, I would be more likely to use greater discretion in my decision making. Travel, Nightlife, Overall, Telephone, Housing: was more expensive than at home. Food: was the same price as at home.
Personal comments:
I made contact with somebody from my host university who was studying at Uppsala before I arrived, and was able to make arrangements to buy some of her essential goods (eg. bike, bedding etc). Made life easier from the outset. I would definitely recommend trying this approach. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Important to choosing this university...
I wish I had known...
More about the Sweden and the Swedes. In my opinion:
Everybody loved it, you will too!
During my experience abroad, I ...
Personal recommendation:
Uppsala Universitet is a wonderful place for exchange students for it houses approximately 1500 students each semester from all around the world. It would be a great opportunity to interact with the vast culture of the world. It was especially great because Uppsala offers a wide range of English speaking course, which is less available in other universities in Europe, except for the United Kingdom. The lecturers are really helpful and knowledgeable. I would encourage anyone thinking of exchange to apply to Uppsala. FINAL COMMENTS
Budget your time and money carefully coz I regretted very much for not leaving out Norway, the only Scandinavian I missed due to short of time. Learn cooking!!!Very essential!!! U might find the Swedish food will not fit your taste bud very much and the cost to eat out is extremely high!!! Also, don't forget your lap tops as internet connection is very much accesible!
