HOUSING
by Luis, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Lisbon, Portugal
Business Studies, Erasmus
Personal assessment
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? Apartments in the city where, and I had not been informed about this until I was close to return to Portugal, cheaper than the University residence, if rented by 3 or 4 students
Personal comments:
Although it wasn't bad and it was quite cheap, from the information I had got from the host university I was expecting better. For instance, they gave us option to have a single room and when we arrived these rooms did not exist. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

STUDENT LIFE

Personal social experience
Describe host city: Students equally interact with the local and student community
Activities, Nightlife, Travel: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment Personal comments:
The favourite and almost only night spot is Stodolni street. I could advise one or more pubs/discos/cafés, but there's everything for every taste, and easy to find also. There's also some nice cafés and restaurants in the centre (I advise 'N. 10'), but these are not as easy to find. I recomend you would meet some local people (students and young people are more than helpful) to guide you through these. Cultural events are also trhiving troughout the city everyday. ACADEMIC

My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
As almost all courses are in Czech language, unless you speak czech you will have private lessons with the teachers. There are a couple of courses in english, though. Try to see if these interest you and if so, pick them, so you can have real interaction with local students.
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
I can only sugest more courses in foreign languages (English, German, French) to attract more exchange students This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Language difficulties
Language of instruction: English
Local language was: Different than language of instruction.
Was learning English a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't. Was learning the local language a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my knowledge How much did you improve your English?
My level before: No problems in any areas (including slang) My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang) How much did you improve your local language?
My level before: Did not speak it My level after: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.) Personal comments:
English was the language of communication in most of the situations 4 me. I've been learnin and speakin it for 11 years now. There were no problems with it. As to the Czech, well, it was very easy 2 understand it - in many ways Russian and Czech are similar. The problem was to speak, but anyway, after 2 weeks I was able 2 say what I want in a restaurant or cafe of in a shop. I think if I had stayed in the country longer I would have been able 2 speak Czech after around 6-8 months. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

EXPENSES

The accessibility of student needs
Main source of funding:
Government assistance Other sources of funding:
Personal savings Government assistance Work opportunities:
I didn't explore any work options Personal spending habits:
Food was cheaper in Ostrava than in Moscow so I was eating out more often than at home, so I spent more or less the same amount of money. As to the phone, I didnt use it that much - my parents and friends were calling me. As to the housing, I didnt pay anything 4 it - it was my University. Nightlife, ok, Stodolni Street was very demanding sometimes, there were times when I spent amounts of money that I wouldnt dare 2 spend at home! I travelled a lot - I had time, at home I dont have time, so I dont travel, its obvious that I spent more than I do at home. But on the whole it turned out 2 b the same money that I usually spend in Moscow. Travel, Nightlife: was more expensive than at home. Food, Overall: was the same price as at home. Telephone, Housing: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
If u really want 2 safe never go 2 Stodolni! U ll leave a fortune there!!! This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

OVERALL

Important to choosing this university...
I wish I had known...
I hadn't any problem, but some friends of mine had because we hadn't been properly warned of pickpockets and so. In my opinion:
Everybody loved it, you will too!
During my experience abroad, I ...
Personal recommendation:
No other thing, but go... but keep secret, we don't want the quiet city of Ostrava invaded by hordes of tourists, do we? FINAL COMMENTS
You might find it hard to travel around, not because there's no access to transports (in the train station you have trains leaving to everywhere from Germany to Moscow), but because you'll find it hard to leave this worderfull town. But Ostrava is close to so many places worth visit that it's almost a shame if you don't. Beware of pickpockets and car thieves. Two friends of mine lost a wallet with almost 100 Euros (100 USDollars) and the car radio in the very first day because they where not properly warned. Also be careful about your jackets and so in night spots. But it's not a dangerous place, and if you take a bit of care it will be a fine experience.
