I found that while many young people spoke English, the older generation spoke mostly Danish. However, they were usually quite helpful in making themselves understood. I did not have much interaction with the Danish though.

Academic
Course recommendations
Many Danish students continued to speak in DANISH even after their teachers asked them to speak in English, as our classes were in English. They even protested having to work with international students in groups. I found that very offensive, and chose to stay with international students. However, there were also many nice Danish students.. you just have to be lucky in who you meet. Anyway, emphasis is placed on group work so make sure you choose wisely because there will be a lot of work!

Some of the projects were quite hard, but teachers were usually very helpful. I preferred classes that did not put 100% of the grade on an exam. But you can choose what type of grading you want in a class before you register, so you will know beforehand how you will be graded.

Denmark is a very very very expensive country!! Everything was at least 1.5x the price in America, so it was hard getting adjusted to that. However, there is not much you can do about the cost.

Denmark is still in Kroners, so don't think Euros will be fine there. Also, coming from America, I was used to being able to use credit cards. However, that is very rarely used in Denmark and most places only accepted Debit cards, so make sure you have another type of funding if you only use credit cards.

Personal recommendation
They should really try integrating the Danish students with the international. We often felt segregated from them and it created animosity amongst many. Also, better accommodation should be provided, especially at the rate they charge for housing.

Final comments
The best part for me were the international students I met and the classes I took. I mainly went to Denmark because I could use English there, but if you want to learn another language and have more fun, choose a warmer European country!! :)

Housing
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
On campus housing was perfect for me initially because it allowed me to meet more international students. However, if I was there for more than 1 semester, I would have moved to an apartment because the facilities were very poor on campus.

Also, for the cost of the housing, we were not getting what was adequate. For many days, the internet would not work properly or the heating was gone so we had to go to other buildings to take showers! The only benefits of living on campus were that it allowed us to meet more people and that it was close to our classes. Many international students are placed in "Campus Village", which are these hopelessly constructed boxes on campus for us to live. The Danish kollegiums were much nicer, but only 10 or so international students obtained housing there. Many other students had to find their own housing and received little or no help from DTU.

DTU had a few parties throughout the semester that were held on campus. These were helpful in allowing us to meet others. However, afterwards, most of my travel and nightlife was done with my own friends, and we had to figure out how to do that ourselves. Copenhagen is not far away from DTU and it is great for nightlife. Travel from Denmark is quite costly, but I was able to go around Sweden, Germany, Czech Republic and Austria in my time there. Best advice: do as much as you can during the summer months, because once winter hits, the weather is too bad to do much.
