In the Netherlands, especially in the big cities as Rotterdam, almast everybody speaks english. The saying is true: The Netherlands is the best place to be a foreigner. I never had difficulties with communicating to local people.

Interaction mainly with international students and therefore English was the dominant language. I Was a bit disappointed in the lack of possibilities to learn the local language but that was more than compensated by other factors.

In the Erasmus University all courses are done in English and the vast majority of the population in the Netherlands speak perfect English. I had the opportunity to improve my English skills and learn a few words in Dutch. However you only need English to survive!

I have improved a lot in the language of instruction. I have had difficult master level exams in English, with open questions and from a higher level than the normal exchange exams (most of them multiple choice)

The Dutch "open society" and the fresh atmosphere at the Erasmus university was a very experience. Dutch and Flemish are ofcourse for 99% the same, so I had no problem whatsoever. Some lectures were in English.

It's quite positive that the instrucion language is english 'cause that gives the possibility to the ones that don't speak dutch to choose rotterdam to have an internacional experience. and for the ones interested it's a possibility to learn another language.
