Try buying food in bulk at large supermarkets rather than the local grocery stores, will save you money. Also a metropass (17 Euros/month) is extremely useful.. try not to live too far away from the city center, rent might be cheaper but you'll spend a lot on transportation.

Stay out of the central part of town if you don't want to spent loads of money. The southern (Navigli) and northern (Brera) parts of town are cheaper and much more 'real' Italian.
