Personal comments
The nightlife in yogya is not the best, but it is possible to have a crazy night. Nightlife is generally expensive in Indonesia. To spend less money you should either go to a bar, or in yogya to liquid. Liquid is a club mainly for undergraduate students, and offers a beer for 25.000 IDR (bottle 600ml Carlsberg).

Housing
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - I had no other choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
I rented a house with three other students. There was a private swimmingpool and a housekeeper. The price of 250€ a person a month is high for Indonesia, but it was definitely worth it! Similar houses are easy to find, but it is also possible to have a nice house without swimmingpool.

Personal comments
The university has its own hotel where you can stay for a long period. This is however not a really pleasant place to stay, and for the same price you can find a nice house. It is an option to stay here the first month, but whereas you can easily find a house in 1-2 weeks you can stay in a hotel as well.

Personal comments
Although the language is not difficult to learn, I chose not to. The english skills of most people are poor. If you have to work on an assignment with a local student be prepared to rewrite his /her whole part, whereas it will be full of mistakes.

Academic
Course recommendations
(This review is on MM UGM)There are not that many courses I was allowed to take with my background in the Netherlands. Also, for many courses a minimum of 5 international students have to take the course (otherwise it will not be teached in english). The focus of most courses is more on quantity rather than quality

Personal comments
(1)focus more on quality (2)no papers at the end of the course, students should be able to concentrate on the exams. (3) It should be allowed to miss 1 or 2 lectures without a reduction of your grade (all international students shared the opinion that it was annoying not being able to plan a trip longer than the weekend). (4)The university should actively look for fraud an plagiarism

Personal spending habits
Food is less expensive than at home, but whereas you will always go out for dinner it will cost you more than at home. Housing can be really cheap, but if you pay the same as at home you can have an incredible house with your own swimming pool and housekeeper. Cheap airlines are flying from yogya.

Personal comments
In the end you will spend lots of money. Most things are not expensive, but you will always go out for dinner, play pool regularly or go to the cinema. If you want to save costs, try to find cheap housing, rent a motorbike (semi-automatic), eat at places with local food, and hang out with local people.

Final comments
I really loved my stay here, but it is possible that some other people are disappointed. The culture is different from western countries, which might be difficult for some people. I am sure you will love it to if you find a nice house and make friends with people with the same mindset (usually other international students).
