I travelled more than in my home country. The food I am used to consume was more expensive in Canada. And I was going out more often than in Vienna. On the other side I didn't use my mobile during my stay.

Overall
I wish I had known...
I was wrong informed by the Canadian Embassy concerning the Visa Requirements - I arrived with a delay. And I wished to know that the courses at HEC Montréal are not so easy as other students told me. A lot to do, but generally ok.

In my opinion:
Everybody loved it, you will too!
Important factors in my choice
(1) Unimportant – (4) Very important
Personal recommendation
Don't think that the exchange semester at HEC Montréal is only party, and take it easy if some teachers are not so open-minded to understand the difference between a native speaker and an exchange student!

During my experience abroad, I ...
(1) Never – (4) A lot
Became familiar with another culture
Met people from other countries
Experienced a change in life
Advanced my studies & career
Final comments
Don't miss the introduction week - it's more easy to find friends and to improve language skills; winter in Canada is really really cold, don't forget the warm clothing. If you if you are still not familiar with the language/life/courses... after some weeks, do not become scared - it takes time. Travel as much as you can, everything is so different to Europe. And become friends with students from other nationalities, it's so much better than spending time with the students from the home country.

Languages
Language of instruction: French
Was learning French a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't.
How much did you improve your French?
My level before: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.)
My level after: At ease in most situations
Language difficulties
Administrative / Institutional
Personal comments
started to speak fluently French, French was spoken between the exchange students nearly all the time; at the beginning when I insecure with my language skills the people continued in English; only some teacher couldn't understand our difficulties

Housing
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
Personal comments
I think I had a lot of luck because my apartment was nearly perfect, all my expectations have been exceeded. a huge room with a huge bed, a desk with chair, another relaxing chair and a walk-in cupboard. I had to share the kitchen, living room and bathroom with another person. we had everything in our apartment excepting a washing machine (was in the basement, I had to pay extra for using them). The apartment was in the sixth floor, about 10 minutes from the university. the locality was also ok (near, bus station, supermarkets, restaurants etc.)
