In the university the students spoke English, but outside the school you had to know enough to get around. Try speaking their language first, and they'll work with you-they thinks its rude for americans to go over there and speak English expecting everyone to know what you're saying (and even if they know English they'll pretend they don't until you try to speak the language).

I spoke a lot of French but found that being in the south of the country there were a large number of tourists and therefore many people just spoke in English to us

Very good. Having lectures in French everyday helped to tune my ear in. By the end I started to get my head round their approach to language.

Obviously I have improved, it would be hard not to although meeting and conversing with the local population is essential to improve.

Most of the studens spoke at least some English. Not a lot of English outside of the university, though.

at the university everyone spoke in english, however in the streets of the city I had to practice french.
