Make sure you get a Carte 12-25 from SNCF (Train company) if you come here. It will help you save quite a lot of money. Try to get a debit card that has a smart chip in it, it makes things more convenient. There are a lot of machines that will not except a debit/credit card with just a magnetic strip. Read Review

HOUSING
Personal assessment
Cost
KEY:
Couldn't have asked for more.
Pretty good.
Could've been better, but didn't lessen the overall experience.
Disappointing.
Facilities
Location
Cleanliness
Space
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - My choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? I enjoy having my own personal space where I can live independently. When using university housing, it is difficult to have out-of-town guests stays with you. Having people over for dinner can be quite confining.
Personal comments:
From what I've seen, it looks nice.

So-so.
Did not get involved.
Nightlife
Travel
Overall
Describe host city: Student life dominates the city
Activities, Nightlife, Travel: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment
Personal comments:
Iéseg has a student run organization that organizes events for foreign students. The nice thing about this organization is that both french and foreign students participate in all the activities. It provides an excellent opportunity to meet people from many different cultures.

It was alright.
A bit annoying.
Didn't like it.
Exams throughout the course
Essays and/or projects at the end of course.
Essays and/or projects throughout the course

Personal comments:
The schedule can change without any prior notice. Students must check their online schedule everyday to see where their classes are.

Overall
Language of instruction: English
Local language was: Different than language of instruction.
Was learning English a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't.
Was learning French a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my French
How much did you improve your French?
My level before: Did not speak it
My level after: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.)
Personal comments:
The langugage courses could use some improvement. However, it is ultimately up to the individual to push himself/herself to use the language regularly.

EXPENSES
The accessibility of student needs
Second-hand text books
KEY:
Very easy.
Minimal effort.
Accessible but required effort.
Almost impossible.
Second-hand household items
Computers / Internet
Administrative
Money from home
Main source of funding:
Family
Other sources of funding:
None
Work opportunities:
I didn't explore any work options
Personal spending habits:
Lille is less than three hours away from several metropolitan cities: Paris, London, Brussels, Amsterdam, Luxemborg. There are also numerous charming villages that are worthy of exploration as well. Travelling on the train is inexpensive with the carte 12-25. This is different from the U.s. where everything is so spread out and traveling is quite expensive.
Travel: was more expensive than at home.
Housing, Nightlife: was the same price as at home.
Food, Overall, Telephone: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
If you travel with student organizations, it becomes extremely cheap to travel.
