London is very expensive. Prepared food/restaurants are more expensive than the U.S. but I compensated by learning how to cook! Accommodation, private or University, was comparable to U.S. University housing but not U.S. apartment living. Nightlife, including restaurants clubs or bars and transport to get home, is disgustingly more. Travel is a tricky one. I've spent more on travel here but that's because it costs so much less to fly from London to Europe than from the U.S.

Financial surprise- A mobile phone was no more expensive than my landline. Buy phonecards to call the U.S. at rates of $.07. I shelled out about $16 a week for transport because most residences are not within reasonable walking distance of campus. I photocopied A LOT totalling well over $100. Then again, I didn't have to buy so many books.

London is a very expensive city. Even LSE accommodation is expensive in comparison to other cities, though its peanuts relative to private accommodation in London. For example, I paid under 100 pounds at Bankside House in my first year, and well over twice that in my second year - and that included sharing costs with a flatmate.

It's all relative. London is an expensive city, but in order to get the best out of the city you're going to have to spend some money.

Accomodation is very very very much expensive in London. But the good thing is that there's a lot of low cost airlines (Easyjet, Ryanair, etc...) that offer trips at almost no cost - it was cheaper to go and spend a week-end in Stockholm (with no hotel expenses) than staying in London !!

I lived with my family at home so food and lodgings were taken care of. Travel is cheaper back home too. Phone calls were the same amount.

You can live on very little if you try really hard. As low as 5 pounds a day, which is basically for food and excludes rent, etc.
