The nightlife was more in towns then on campus (though the campus had 9 pubs). Lancaster is FULL of pubs. To go clubbing, we had the choice between the nightclubs of the town with local people (they are very nice) and the university nightclubs (full of students) where several parties were organised every week.

Housing
Type of housing: With a family
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
I started to live with a family. They were very nice (which is not the case of all host families) but I did not feel free to invit friends or listen to the music. Then I moved to campus. The room was great and people living on campus were nice. However the campus was a bit far from the city center. So if I was to go back I would choose a room/flat in town on my own or with flatmates.

The good point was that it is always easy to move if you want to change accomodation. Host family: Not homogenuous, some families are very nice and very helpful (especially when you just arrived and are on your own). Nevertheless you can have some bad surprises sometimes. On campus: Depending on the college you are in some rooms are better than other (size, noise, sharing the kitchen and toilets, etc). If you are moving on campus during the year, you can ask for a visit of all the rooms available. In a flat: As a student it is almost impossible to live on your own ... but easy to share a house. The 2nd year students all live in houses in town. Thus there is a constant demand for new flatmates.

Personal spending habits
Compared with France: the UK is hugely expensive. Lancaster (which is a small town) is as expensive as Paris !!!! A room in Lancaster costs a little bit more than a room in Paris. The food is VERY expensive especially if you want some fresh food (vegs, meat, etc). Travel is not so expensive but for the same price you get more in France. To sum up, the only thing which is cheap is clubbing and beer (in Lancaster, not in London) and overall you constantly have this feeling that you spend too much money. However, it is easy to get a student job to get pocket money and the UK is worth the expense.

I wish I had known...
That it is not always easy to meet local students. At the beginning I had much more international friends than British friends. That it is so difficult to come back home after one year in Lancaster.

It is a very international university. You will have the opportunity to meet people from almost everywhere in the world and to get to know more about the British culture). Therefore the university is used to welcoming international students and everything is arranged for your own convinience. A lot of facilities are directly on campus (library, bookstore, bank, etc)

Final comments
Lancaster University is definitely worth visiting. It is a great Erasmus destination (despite the weather)which is REALLY international. To reach it, Liverpool and Manchester are the closest airports (From Paris I suggest you to take Easyjet to Liverpool). If you want to travel the train is a good solution but is not always reliable. So if you are really have to be on time, take an early train. People from Lancaster are very nice and helpful. So if you feel lost do not hesitate to ask for some help.

Learning the academic vocabulary in English was the easiest. After a couple of months I had no problems anymore. The social vocabulary was longer to acquire: it can be difficult when you are with a group of English and you are the only foreigner. However, you get used to speaking with people from different origins (local and foreigners)and to understanding different sorts of accents in English. KEEP IN MIND that it is very easy to stay all the time with friends from your country (or speaking the same langauge as you) and to spend a year in the UK without improving your level of English.
