Night spots: Herrgår'n in Ryd Tuesdays for the International Pub, Fridays and Saturdays; Nationernas Hus everytime especially in the summer a nice place; Platå and Platen's very near to each other good places on days with student prices; student parties (Kravall) and Sittnings in Kårallen and elsewhere are compulsory (not all but most of them); special highlight is the SOF (student orkester festival) every second year in Linköping, the next will be in 2003, I had the luck to expirience it...great; always watch out for special events organized by the different student communities (Draget, Le Mans, ELINpiaden ...)

Housing
Type of housing: room with shared kitchen
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: room with shared kitchen
Why?
I was really lucky with my corridor mates, had never so much fun with people. I love to have conversation and parties whenever I enter the corridor and that was really the case on our corridor in Ryd.

The rooms are sufficient large and the bathroom directly connected to the room, so you don't have to share it with other people...very good. The kitchen has to be shared with the corridor mates and is large enough if not all eight want to cook at the same time. Telephone and a connection to the internet are available, especially the internet connection was a great advantage and this for a really moderate price.

It is no problem not to speak Swedish if English is known. Most of the Swedes speak fairly good English, in every case better than in Germany. To learn Swedish was a great experience because I couldn't speak it at all and now after almost one year the communication with the Swedes is no problem at all. The ability to speak Swedish allowed me a faster integration in the Swedish society. It is always good to show the will to speak in the native language.

Personal recommendation
Keep on going with the amazing variety of student activities. Never stop to spend money for the education the equipment as it has happend in Germany. Stay as open minded as it is, I enjoyed the uncomplicated contact with the teachers.

Final comments
In the end I have to say that it was a great year for me, maybe the best of my life. Most of the people enjoyed their stay and I personaly extended my stay here from six month to one year, it is great to experience a full cycle. Never hesitate to ask for help or for anything else, Swedes like to give a helping hand, that is my impression, have never experienced something else. Enjoy your time!! Sebastian

Academic
Course recommendations
Never hesitate to ask teachers, there will always be a helping hand. If you want to learn Swedish, take courses given in Swedish. Most of the courses contain laborations which give a deeper insight in the theoretical learnt, don't be afraid of these labs.

Personal comments
All in all it was good ... keep on going with the practical work in the labs, that ws really better than in Germany. A bit more and deeper insight in the theoretical background would have been sometimes desirable. Keep your flexibility!
