The winter's can be quite cold and dark (so bring warm clothes!) but don't let that bum you out. I have found each of the seasons here to be charming in their own unique ways. Swedes themselves love Spring and Summer especially. Just be prepared. In the long, dark winter months, keep your spirits high by finding fun ways to spend your time!

It's very wise to plan already in advance which courses you want, where you want to stay (apply as soon as possible for a room!), and how you go there (I recommend by car or plane)

An exchange program is, according to me, the best way to improve a language. Of course the official language of Sweden is ... Swedish. But "native swedish" people speak perferct English. And English is THE official language between international students. It is amazing how this language can unite people ! I think the area in which you improve the most is the understanding. Now I can easily communicate in English with native people, which was not the case before. An everyday life in a foreign language is also the best way to learn plenty of new words day after day.

Housing costs a lot less in Lund than it does at Berkeley, and traveling anywhere in Europe is considerably cheap compared to prices in the States.

Buy a used bike. A bike is pretty necessary here and relatively cheap. Also, cell phones can be picked up second hand which can also save you some money.

Sweden is a country offering many beautiful locations to go to. A must is stockholm! it is also nice to make a trip to norway and go see the fjords and bergen. Concerning student life, enter a nation (preferably VGs...best parties)! Otherwise, enjoy your stay in lund as much as possible and have fun!

I wish I had known...
There actually were not "bad surprises". The home university gives an extend information about the university, town, things to do... But it is always useful to meet someone that has already been there.

They should try to make more activities mixing nationals and foreigners. And make it easier for the people that want to learn swedish.

Do not be lazy and move. Do things. Time flies, and before you notice is time to come back. Do not hesitate to do new things, and take the best of all the posibilities that come to you. It is a once life experience.
