Personal spending habits
The prices for housing are higher than back home in Graz, and I had a worse room in a worse area for more money than back home in Austria. When going to clubs in England, you usually have to pay to get in. Drinks can often be cheap, on student nights especially. However, mind how you get back home. I usually took a cab to get back, Manchester's not safe, so I preferred spending money for cabs rather than being attacked on the streets..

Watch out for flyers to get into the clubs for little money, watch out for announcements in the papers, watch out for offers in the supermarkets! :-)

I never had any problems expressing what I wanted to say, but naturally, my English improved loads during my stay in Manchester. As I had never been to the Northern part of England before, I had to get used to the Northern accent. I liked it a lot, and in the end, you start picking up the accent, too.

I wish I had known...
Not really. I guess I knew everything I needed to know beforehand. You never know everything. But if you want to get infos on Manchester, there are lots of webpages to check out, and your university coordinator will be able to help you, too.

Manchester is well-situated, so if you're into travelling, this is your city - whether you're into short trips (to nearby places like Liverpool or the lakes) or into longer ones up to Scotland, for instance. Get informed about possible train or bus discounts at Piccadilly station or the National Express bus station.

I loved "Readings of Myth", a second year course. The teacher was absolutely great.

No complaints about my department at all. The teachers were understanding and helpful, my coordinator was top. He said right at the beginning that Erasmus students are there to get to know the English culture, way of living, etc., and wouldn't stress academic life too much. Well, you still had to work, tough.. Yes, but they tried to make things easier for Erasmus students.

Manchester's well-known for its club scene. Clubs open and close, so it's hard to give recommendations. Make sure you do not miss out on the bars on Canal Street in the Gay Village, and explore the nightlife in Castlefield. It's top!

Housing
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
I like being with other people, but I do not like being with lots of people (like in a hall of residence) all the time. In a shared house, you have a couple of people you are living with and you can get to know them well. When you want your peace and quiet, you go to your room. In a hall of residence chances are that it'll be loud and noisy all the time.

As an Erasmus student, I was sent material about my possibilites beforehand. The Manchester Metropolitan University, the MET, organises this pretty well, and if it's your first long-term stay abroad, you may be grateful for this help. You can also just go to Manchester, see the notices around & find a house on your own. Check out whether you've got to make a contract for at least 10 months!!
