I wish I had known...
I didnt really have any difficulties whilst being in Canada but be sure to sort everything out with visa and registration before getting there. Also, arrive early to find a decent place to live because if you arrive too late - you might end up living in a dump!

Its a great university with good lecturers and an interesting selection of modules. The campus is stunning and its close to everything. There is a brilliant international student society which organises trips to ottawa, new york etc. Be sure to sign up!

Organise pre-departure stuff early! Arrive early to get good accommodation. Be sure to do some travel. I went to Ottawa, in and about Montreal and also went by Greyhound bus all the way down to Miami! If you buy a greyhound ticket two weeks before departure it is substantially cheaper. A trip to either N.Y or Florida should be on everyones agenda whilst staying in Canada. Wish I had gone to Victoria and the Canadian West coast as well but when the semester starts you will be really busy with courses and there wont be much time to take a week off.. Prepare to study a LOT because the courses are quite demanding in terms of course work, and lectures.

Artificial Intelligence, 2022
Overall

Try to arrange a sort of room/apartment swap possibility for exchange students. It probably sounds easy to let exchange students from abroad to get in touch with Canadian students who are also going on exchange, but, as far as I know, such thing doesn't really exist.

1. Visit Quebec City, it's a very nice "European" town where most people only speak French and the surroundings, as well as the center look beautiful, cozy and exciting. 2. Don't forget to go on a ski trip, it's possible during both all semesters (except the summer semester) and if you are not experienced with skiing, that's definitely not a problem. 3. Since Montreal is the heart of Canada's Quebec province, the native language of the majority of its population is French. If you want to improve your French or start learning it, choose Montreal for your exchange!

I wish I had known...
I wished I had more time to travel to the suburbs, and got to know the city more instead of hanging around with just the student places, but due to lack of my own transport, this was a problem.

NY, Boston, Toronto, Quebec, and Ottawa are all within travel distance and excellent weekend trips. The nature and scenery are well worth a trip, places for hiking are easily accessible

It cold in here in the winter, but perfect May-September. Don't take the first apartment you find! Montreal is a "renter's market."

McGill is hard hit financially. They just a $64 million dollar gift though from one alumnus. Its not Harvard, but it has a great international reputation.

Come here to meet international students. They are everywhere. Its great. The Canucks are nice too once you get to know them a bit, just don't make too much of their health care or high taxes--they don't like that. The US-Canadian dollar exchange rate makes the cost of living and tuition (which is already low) very cheap compared to studying in the states. The classes are big here, but the professors are always happy if you visit them in their office or after class. I highly recommend McGill.
