Apply for your housing early. There are 5 international student houses and they are very popular.

Housing isn't inexpensive in Groningen. There's a chronic lack of accomodation for students and it seems to get worse year by year. So take the first that is offered to you. Afterwards you can try to find (better/cheaper?) something else. Nightlife is really cheap and you can get yourself wasted with low budget ;)

It's quite easy to travel in the Netherlands because of short distances. Get The Off-peak Discount Pass to trains. You'll get a 40% discount from off-peak (weekdays after 9 am) trips and pays itself back quicly. Also bike is mandatory if you want to move. Don't buy the first second-hand bike that you'll see, make some comparison...

Groningen is a fantastic place to study, a real student-town. The university-staff were really helpful and relaxed.

Don't think twice if you're considering coming here, it really was the best experience I've had. Make sure you secure accommodation before you arrive, be prepared for some initial communication problems (you'll get over these soon enough!) and make the most of your time abroad, it'll be over before you know it. You're going to have an amazing time!

Course recommendations
Readers must normally be bought for every course and often there is a supplementary book also, so buying reading materials can be expensive if you are staying for the year and studying perhaps 9 or 10 courses. A good idea is to club together with your friends and share readers, which are specifically tailored to the course to not as good value as a proper book which you can use again.

Courses in Groningen were extremely varied as regards workload and difficulty, so it is difficult to generalise, but overall I had no real problems.
