I spoke english very well before going to the UK to study there. I had live in the United States before so I did not encounter any language difficulties. Only the 5 year old daughter of my landlady did not understand some of my American English ;-)! I learned B.E. very fast and was able to substitute A.E. words by B.E. words - no problem at all.

Academic
Course recommendations
I chose four classes which was the regular workload of a British student. At the beginning I was bored because we usually had classes from 8 in the morning until late in the afternoon in Germany whereas I had lots of off days in England. I knew why when I saw the reading list. We had to spend a lot of tiem in the library and doing work at home. You absolutely need to do all the required reading otherwise you will fail the courses! Following in class was easy, the courses I had chosen were alright, some excellent, some ok.

Personal spending habits
Things were more expensive than they are in Germany especially housing as well as food and toiletries. Besides I wanted to travel a little bit to get to know the country and therefore spend some money on train tickets, hotels, rental cars etc.

There was a fruit and vegetable as well as book market on campus where one could save some money. There is a Lidl and Aldi supermarket in Feltham which is a lot cheaper than Tesco, Waitrose etc. I had a few jobs on campus doing tests for the Business Department where you were paid right away. They usually paid very well and one could earn some extra money.

I wish I had known...
A car would have been helpful, you need to walk a lot!!! I lived 15 minutes from campus which was alright. It was a 20 minute walk to the train station and a 25 minute walk to the supermarket. it wasn't fun carrying all the bags home. Besides, I was kind of stuck in the evenings. Trains are not necessarily very reliable. I had a car at home, I could have taken it...Unfortunately I did not know. Be prepared to spend a lot of money!

Final comments
They have a good website with lots of pictures. We travelled to Brighton and Oxford which was fun! Going again I would try to live in Staines think because there is everything there. Close to London - great on weekends, we went there a lot. Direkt train connection to Waterloo takes 35 minutes!

Housing
Type of housing: With a family
Arranged by: Independently - I had no other choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
More independent way of living, more space. Living with other students would have been great! Living within a family needs a lot of adjustment.

Housing on campus was not offered to visiting students staying for less than one full year. Therefore I had to find accomodation on my own which was not that easy. The Accomodation Office of the University had sent a list of possible landladies/-lords. Some of them were not willing to house international students, others would only rent out a room for a period of at least one year.

Royal Holloway is close to London. There is a train station in Egham (15-20 minute walk from Campus). London offers everything you can think of. Good places closer by are Staines as well as Windsor with lots of pubs, clubs, restaurants. Staines has a cinema complex and plenty of stores as well as an indoor pool. There was a good café on campus which was cheap and had excellent coffee, sandwiches etc. there is a gym on campus which is alright and offers nice classes.
