Italian is not a very hard language to learn since I'm Portuguese. ALtough to get a good grip of it it requires some study and time that I used for other stuff while I was there. I could have gotten out of Italy speaking better Italian, I realize that, but I'm still reading books in Italian and everyday I check Italian news sites, so I guess my italian will stay at a basic/intermediate level.

In the begining, I couldn't communicate on the phone in order to find an accomodation..I had a language course before the beginning of the semester, so I learnt some phrases so as to communicate in the daily life but I still had problems understanding the professors. As time was passing, I learnt to communicate in italian pretty well and I also learnt local slang language. When I was about to leave, I had almost none problem communicating with the local people.

I always wanted to learn Italian. Its quite an easy language to learn compared to others. Italy is the perfect place to learn the local language -because you have to! The Italians really only speak Italian, and not English... The only opportunity to have a good social life is to learn the language asap

Hanging out with students of my program proved a big minus in learning the language to the degree that I wanted to. It's difficult not to grow closer to the other american students on the program as time goes by, but I wouldn't advise it simply because it takes away from the overall experience.

Its easy to talk and communicate with itliens if you have the knowledge of the language. They are very openly and the language isn´t so difficult. On university it was quit more difficult but you can managed it past a while.

In the beginning it was not easy at all.But you learn very quickly as people in Italy often don't speak another language than their own. It's the perfect way to learn a language.People are so nice there that you d'ont fear to make mistakes and that you automatically speak Italian to ask something.
