Personal spending habits
Japan is a relatively expensive place. Another thing is, in the U.S. I live at home so I have few expenses.

My only suprise was how much money I had left when I checked my savings the last week. Then again there's a lot of money I didn't spend on things like traveling far away and such. You can actually live pretty cheaply if you're smart. If you're on a budget shop at the KyuKyu (99 yen store) you can get everything from produce to school supplies there.

Academic
Course recommendations
I only had a choice of the language course since I took part in the summer program. Like another reviewer said, don't expect too much academically. If you go to learn Japanese, you will get better though, no question. How much really depends on how much an effort you put forth in the class and probably most importantly, conversation with native speakers outside of class.

I wasn't a big fan of the presentation at the end of the course, although it turned out not be such a big deal. I actually liked the short essays though. Other than that it was pretty good.

I wish I had known...
To pack less stuff! I packed too many clothes and thus had to limit what I could buy/bring back.

Personal recommendation
Take advantage of all Senshu has to offer, watch movies in the library with friends, work out in the gym and if you can manage it, get to the campus pool (closes REALLY early though). But most of all make a lotta friends and talk in Japanese as much as possible.

Final comments
Get out as much as you possibly can, in the afternoons and weekends. You'll regret it if you don't. Take part in the homestay. Oh and take the Narita Express instead of the limousine bus to Shinjuku from Narita, much smoother, comfortable, shorter ride.

I'd studied Japanese seriously for about two years prior to going. So it was actually very convenient for me. I know my Japanese definitely improved and I now speak with much more confidence than before.

Housing
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: On campus
Why?
I became good friends with the Japanese RA's and the other 40 some people living in the dorm. The dorm life was pretty good I'd say.

On the second floor, where I stayed, the rooms are very spacious with 2-3 per room. On the 3rd floor there's generally 4 to a room in bunk beds. Since I was on the third floor I was quite happy. Sometimes it can be a little dirty, i.e. hair in the washroom sinks at times which is kinda gross but then again it could be a lot worse. There's a large kitchen with cubbies for non-perishable items and in the fridge you have a bin for your perishables. Overall I'd say if you're not too picky about your space then you'll be fine.

You'll be in Kawasaki City not actually Tokyo but Tokyo is REALLY close by train. Tokyo is probably the coolest city on earth in my book so you can find all kinds of places there. The Raj Mahal in Shinjuku (South Exit of station) has really great Indian food for around 30,000 Yen for a course. In Kawasaki itself check out くら寿司 (Kura Sushi) awesome hightech sushi joint as well as Ootoya (next to Mukogaokayuen station).
