I learned very much Spanish, which was due to the fact that both in my flat we all spoke Spanish and I also took all the classes in Spanish. I went to class regularly (did not miss any except for when I had a flu) and tried to interact with the local students as well as the teachers. My own activity was very important in learning. I also think the ERASMUS language course was useful.

At the beginning it sure was frustrating not to understand everything or not being able to say what you wished to tell. Yet, with time the communication skills in the foreign language improve and it gets easier to get around. There will still be situations in which one feels to fall back a big step, but do not give up and keep on trying. It will definately be worth the pain! ;)

The most important thing is to dare speaking and meet local students to comunicate with them. The best is to share a flat with local students and above all, avoid living with students speaking the same language than yours

Being half Ecuadorian was a bit of a cheat really so had no real problems. Even the ussualy unfathomable Andalucian accent proved little challenge as thats more or less how it goes in Quito. Teachers were a little hard to follow at first as they used loads of academic level Spanish...but we all slowly worked it out.
