Housing
Type of housing: With a family
Arranged by: Home university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
When I first got there, I lived w/a single woman who was very nice. But I did not like the accomodations or feeling like I had to be home for all meals or call if I wasn't going to be there. I felt like my freedom was a bit restricted. A couple of people I was on the program with like living w/their families, though. I saw their accomodations-they were better than mine.

I moved out of the Senora's apartment and looked for my own apartment 2 weeks into my time there. I wish I had spent more time apt. hunting b/c I was not in a good location. But I did enjoy the people I lived with. They were from all over-one was Dutch/Italian, one was Spanish, one was Swedish, and one was from New York. I was the only female there w/a bunch of guys for most of the time, but it was not a problem at all. Nobody was actually home a lot of time anyway.

If I were to go back to Sevilla, I would choose to live in an apartment with a Spanish roommate so that I would be better able to meet locals and thus speak more Spanish

As I mentioned, I went through ISA (International Studies Abroad). However, Vanderbilt is not associated with ISA, so I had to go through another american university in order to be able to study at the University of Sevilla. SO, I went through ASU. The housing arrangements were adequate - I enjoyed the family I lived with and the location was great, but I shared a very small bedrooom with another girl (who happened to be my friend) and felt cramped a lot of the time.

the price for accommodation is too expensive for the normal family with whom a student will be placed.the cheapest way for a student would be to live with other students, but in many cases, one will often find foreign exchange students living with other foreign exchange students, and therefore losing the opportunity to learn the other language.

The school did not help set up housing for us, so upon arrival we were obligated to go look for a place ourselves. But I would recommend doing the same because once you arrive there are many postings listed all over the campus, the city and on the internet for apartments for rent, probably because there are so many international students coming in and out. There is a good company that helps you with looking for an apartment if you still feel stuck and the website/email is called roomatesevilla.com

I've lived in apartments with Spaniards both years that I was living in Spain for study and work. I think you gain a more realistic experience and understanding of the culture when living with people around your own age, especially if you become friends with them. You are also able to practice your language skills on a daily basis.

The university program initially set us up with a family. However, we lived with other American students and paid too much money for the time and place. I chose to find my own housing.

My apartment was located in the Pedro Salvador neighborhood near the Betis Stadium. The commute to the Rectorado on Avenida de San Fernando was about 30 minutes by bus (#33). I would have preferred to stay closer to the university (at walking distance), perhaps in Triana, Los Remedios, or in the Santa Cruz neighborhood.

The apartment itself was fine. I shared a 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom space with 3 other university students.
