My main reason to go to Spain was to learn the language of the country. In my opinion Spanish is of the best languages to know. However, in the beginning I only knew very basic phrases and didn't feel well prepared through my Spanish courses at my home university. For example, I couldn't even order things without any problems. I had master dificulties. But with the help of my Spanish friends which I partly already had met at my home university I learned really fast. I hardly was in contact with any other exchange student and tried to live the Spanish way of life. I think that is the best way to really absorb the language.

I think the only way to learn a foreign language is to go into a country where the language is spoken. You have to experience it, feel it, dream in it and having it constantly around it. That´s the way it works. Furthermore the culture is playing an important role as well. It is all a part of it.

In the beginning it was not easy for me. But the people are very nice and try to help you whereever they can. A good way to acquire the language is doing sports with spanish people, or going out with them. The best way is to live with them.

At first it was hard because at times it was hard to interact with the locals but there were many international students to meet and talk to and as the year progressed we made friends with some of the locals so that was worthwhile.

Speaking to the locals is the best way to improve your language so try and get involved as much as possible in university activities with students other than the international students

Communication wasn't at all a problem in San Sebastian as the instructors and the local people were so helpful and open to students coming in and learning the language.
