Personal comments
Communication with other students was the main way I learnt the language. Lectures were useful for picking up technical language but did not give you much opportunity for speaking. It was useful to have to organise 'carte de sejour' and other administrative documents. Beig in a university with so many Erasmus students made it all the more hard to find peolpe to speak french to as English quickly became the common language. It was worth joining a few sports clubs alone to meet french people.

Academic
Course recommendations
First year courses in France are always packed so you might find yourself 100 rows back in an auditorium finding it hard to hear much, so if you are after more interaction with the lecturers try and access second year lectures. I was allowed to choose my subjects which gave me a chance to try out subjects I wouldnt be able to take in my home university.

Personal comments
The lecturers will not make any allowances for students working in a second language which is really useful for throwing yourself into the language but means that you can potentially be left behind. A pauiring up system might help this, with french students offering help in certain subjects in exchange for language lessons.

Personal spending habits
Food and drink were more expensive in France when I was living there. In order to meet people I went out a bit more than I would if I were at home so spent more on nightlife. I wanted to see the surronding areas and with main cities beig linked by good rail networks I travelled around alot but trains are very good value for money in France so i spent less.

Personal comments
Administration is very long winded in France and really takes time to complete, be prepared to spend alot of time in queues and then be asked to come back again with another form with money for something else! It is essential to set up a french bank account if you want to pay for rent. You are charged a minimal monthly fee for a french account which means you need to remember to close it when you leave the country.

I wish I had known...
In a Univeristy such as Chambery there is likely to be a large groups of Erasmus students from all over the world who will have a common language of English and you have to make a real effort to find a french speaking crowd

There is a real ski culture and it is worth trying some of the university ski trips as they are really good value for money and hassle free if you havent skied before.

Final comments
If you are travelling alone maybe staying in university accomodation will be an easy way to make french friends. Make the most of the good rail service as Paris is only a few hours away as is the south coast. It goes so fast so make the most of every day!

Housing
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - My choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
I enjoyed living independently as it allowed me to immerse myself in the culture by experiencing every day life of paying for bills and rent. Finding yourself accomodation can often be cheaper than student halls and you have more control over the area in which you choose to live.

Housing was located very close to the university which was useful for term time. It was fairly expensive but did include all amenities, making it a simple option for people who might not necessarily had much experience of living away from home. There was limited private accomodation but a very useful housing service provided by the municiple which would help find something specific to your needs. I found an appartment by spotting a poster in a shop window for the flat above and I found it perfect for my needs; central, relatively cheap and sharing with another student.

Charlies was fun and next to student accomodation so generally good for meeting other students. The Irish bar on the square was always livley and packed, expecially in summer when they get the outside tables and chairs out. This was also a good place to meet people. For a quiet drink, there is a bar on every corner. It would generally be the Erasmus students filling the bars, with the French students coming out at the weekends.
